Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Very nice. I was last in England back in 1972 visiting my relatives in Manchester and Newcastle. Would love to go back someday but many have now passed on but I do keep in touch with one cousin in Solihul (Birmingham) and another still in Newcastle. I suppose it's a lot different now as back then there wasn't a MacDonalds or KFC anywhere. That would ruin it for me LOL. We watch all the HGTV home and garden shows including the English ones and mom who left the UK in 48 laments that she couldn't afford to buy a place back there now.

Loved the pictures - especially fascinating are the buildings that aren't squared and level anymore. Over here, they would put barricades all around -- until it could be torn down and the new WalMart could be built in it's place! ;-)

Thanks for those - it's fun to see where our members live.

I was in London for a while in the very early eighties, and you can't even imagine how visually bleak it (and most of England) looked, compared to now....to give you an idea, the neighborhood of old houses I was staying in was COMPLETELY LEVELLED a few years after, lol!

My grandfather came from Liverpool, and that town was hurting pretty bad at the time too...

You have no idea how civilized the UK looks to me now, how orderly.

I really like the idea of the pedestrian zones in town. It reminds me of the "high streets". We have a few towns like that in the suburbs here, but they are fast disappearing...and you never see a pedestrian zone like that anymore!

Here, everything is the mall, the mall, the mall....and they all look the same!

Its not bleak!

Nick I think your town looks beautiful. Real towns with squares and old building that have been standing for hundreds of years with personality and no doubt many stories to tell.

The UK has so much history and charm.

Chester, Middle England!!!

Nice one Nick, we do forget how great this place is until you see it through the eyes of visitors etc....

Here`s a link to when Jon (Jetcone) visited last year, and Scott (Scott55405)before that, we nearly signed up to join with the Gladiators...LOL

Hi Mike!

Yeah i find it very sad after living in Nantwich for 3 years I took the beauty for granted.

Now I moved back to Crewe 8 months ago whenever I get the chance to nip back to Nantwich it amazes me how different it seems.

In fact it seems to have lost the snob value too, people will move out the way for you in shops etc etc. Something ive never known.

But nothing compares to a bit of shopping in Chester..... I just love the galleries that run round the top level of Browns. I can spend hours in the Cookware section of County China! LOL

and to stop for a coffee in that posh looking Cafe "Boulevard" well makes the trip complete.

Starbucks and Cafe Nero just dont have the same feel....

Im proud to say Im from Cheshire,

Nick

Pfft... North? I'm further North than you guys, and still don't really count it as such :p

I like seeing pictures of older towns, especially when they're substantially different to where I live.

Well the title was referring to the cruddy weather on Tuesday, maybe we are'nt "North" but we are definite North West according to the Local BBC News fronted by Mr Krypton Factor himself.

And we also get Corro first hand from the guys who make it. We come under Manchesters "Granada TV" for ITV.

But just being north west would explain why we dont have the Justified Ancients of MU MU Land driving around in their Ice Cream vans........

LOL

Nick

Nick lives in Granadaland, and I live in Anglialand! LOL Jon (lavamat_jon) lives in Yorkshireland. nickuk lives in Anglialand or Londonland. LOL

Well, I can get London channels as well because we officially in a dual region area.

For those of you who do not understand what we are talking about (“Irritating Brits!” you say), please see the link. Granada and Anglia are the names for what used to be – and legally still are – independent regional television stations that make up Channel 3 (again, a legal term), or the ITV Network, which is referred to on air in most regions as “ITV1” (Independent Television).

There are regional news programmes at certain times of the day, along with the odd regional programme on certain interests. The regions are further split into subregions, which allows for even more local news, as well as closely focused advertising.

One large company, called (confusingly) ITV plc (public limited company – that is, with publicly traded shares) owns 11 of the 15 franchises. The other four are owned by three separate companies – SMG (Scottish Media Group; for the two Scottish regions), UTV (for Northern Ireland) and Channel TV (for the Channel Islands; known on-air as “ITV Channel Television”). ITV plc was formed from the merger of Granada (which runs services where Nick lives) and Carlton (which technically still broadcasts during the week in my area).

Across the 11 ITV plc regions, on-screen presentation is consistent – that is, there is no distinction in terms of announcers now because all of that is done from London. ITV1 Wales does get the occasional “Wales” bit added below the main ITV1 logo at times, however. Without being cynical, there is an obsession amongst some in the UK with ‘rebranding’ many companies, products and services to the point of absurdity sometimes, as if ‘old’ names are to be banished because are… too ‘old’. Our own post office, still owned by the UK Government as a plc, renamed itself “Consignia” a few years ago in a huge money-burning exercise. That did not last long, and it reverted to “Royal Mail”.

There is also a separate station called GMTV (Good Morning Television), which is the breakfast television station broadcasting between the hours of 6am and 9.25am. During those hours, the ITV Network is actually off the air. GMTV is 75% owned by ITV plc, with the rest being owned by Walt Disney. Many in the UK perceive GMTV to be simply a programme on ITV1 – it isn’t because it is a station in its own right, selling its own advertising and making its own programmes. (Don’t argue with me, Nick! ;-))

Anyway, where was I? ;-) This is a forum for washers! LOL

Lovely pictures, Nick! :-) Many of the pictures remind me of my town – Bishop’s Stortford.

Sorry I have not got any photos of my own. :-(

Crazy fact: part of my town is located in another county – Essex! Also, until 1992, my part of the road I live in was in Essex – our road was literally split across two counties (Hertfordshire and Essex), so we even had different people collecting our rubbish/trash compared with the neighbours! LOL
