Hi guys,
Just letting you guys know i have just been in hospital for some minor surgery to remove an absess on the base of my spine. The name they give these things is 'Pilonidal Sinus' and apprently they are really common. Its basically caused by ingrowing hairs becoming infected and causing a very painful absess. I had surgery on Boxing Day to clean it up but they didn't remove it and yesterday i had it all removed.
I did not have a fun time in hospital, i had bad nausea after the aneasthetic and the area that was stiched up was very sore, and i could only lie on my side, not on my back (further discomfort). I had some lovely nurses however that really did try and make me as comfortable as possible.
However when i got home this morning i was not feeling great as the painkiller drugs they put me on make me mega drowsy and Billy my dog recognized that i was not well and followed me around until i went to bed, he then laid next to me without moving until i woke up, even when people tried to make him move off the bed, he wouldn't, he was like my guardian angel.
Its funny how our pets can sense our discomfort and our pain, Billy made me feel so much better just by lying there looking out for me.
Heres a pic my father snapped of me sleeping with billy refusing to move, i don't look my best in this picture but i was very tired (the nurses had to wake me up every two hours in hospital to check my blood pressure etc..)

Has anyone else ever suffered from these 'pilonidal sinus' like things?, they are common in hairy men (the nurse was very blunt in saying it was caused by my hairy butt lol).

Take care
Matt and Billy

Matt I hope that you will soon be feeling "great" again, Billy looks like a great friend!!

Surgery!

Hi Matt,
I know how you feel. Almost 2 years ago I had a hernia operation. And no matter what it takes time to heal and patience. I am not a person that goes to doctors but as I learned you got to do what you got to do. Believe me it will be all up hill at this point and you have the worst behind you now. Feel better and Best Wishes
Peter
PS Billy is a real nice dog.

Been there, done that

Matt,
I had the same operation, which I knew as a pilonidal cyst, back in 1974 & 1975. Things went rather smoothly for me, although I did need the second operation. It just takes a few weeks of rest to recover, during which time, you can't lift any heavy washing machines. Just relax and enjoy the Australian weather.

Matt....

I hope you're better soon!

I've had one, too, but had to stay in the hospital, because it was decided that I needed further antibiotic treatment.

Billy is a four-legged Angel. You're lucky to have each other.

Speedy recovery Matt. Two friends of mine had the same thing, one in the same place as you and the other had one on his thigh, both were hairy guys. They recovered quickly but complained of the site pulling every time they moved. just rest, take care of yourself. You can see why dogs are called "mans best friend" he's taking care of you.

Matt, sorry ya had to endure this. A speedy recovery. Billy is the perfect nurse. My Beau did the same thing to me when I was ill. A gentle hug. Bob

Pilonidal Sinus

Are indeed common. My cousin suffered from one; I think the treatment was to keep the wound open, to allow the tissue to heal from the inside, and thus prevent recurring problems. (One's bottom area is subjected to high levels of bacteria, and such problems can come back).

My boyfriend is a nurse, and he is aware of the problem (he's hairy too!).

Matty, I hope you will be doing better really soon. Glad you have your wonderful pet to keep you company as you rest. I've not heard of this situation before, but from the sound of things its fairly prevalent.

No Fun

The trick in pain management is to catch the wave and then ride it in. Never allow the drug to wear off and "feel" pain. There is a pain curve, or half life of every drug. I begin with a full dose and then break the pill in half taking it twice as often in half the strength so there is a constant and even supply of the pain killer in your system. No need to be a man about this, my friend, ask for what you need. Rest all you can and as soon as your better, teach the dog to type so he can let us know how you're doing.
Kelly

best wishes

Hello Matty,
I hope you are recovering from your surgery and will soon be on your feet, I was laid up for a couple of weeks after my hernia operatin a few years ago but you will heal.
Also as others have posted if you need medication or painkillers or the like, do not be afraid to ask for them.
Cheers.
Steve.

Best Wishes for a Quick Recovery

Hey, Matt! :-)

I know I’ve already spoken to you, but all the best, mate. :-)

You take it easy and get lots of appropriate rest and activity in. :-)

Billy looks lovely – he’s certainly doing his job! :-)

I’ll see you on MSN soon. :-)

Take care. :-)

Regards,

Carl :-)

thanx guys for the supportive comments, gives me something to read while i'm sat here unable to do anything.
The pain is getting better day by day, i can change my own dressings which means i don't have to have a nurse coming in the morning to do it which is something i suppose.
I went out yesterday to get a mothers day present (a new Hills ironing board for mum coz her old one is nearly dead) and i had to have a nap when i got back, its hard work t walk around because u have to be so careful.
The painkillers help a lot, if u take on and then go and lie down then u fall asleep real easy.
Its just a pain in the ass (literally) coz i'm usually a very busy guy, what with work and uni and other things, its hard to get used to sitting around doing nothing, ah well , not for much longer i hope.
Anyway, heres a sneak peek of something new i might be aquiring in the next few weeks, nothing definate yet but its a definate maybe :)
Take care guys.
