I once read that the late Helen Hayes a long time friend of Crawford stated, Joan tried to be all things to all people, I just wish she hadn't tried to be a mother. She also added that she thought Joan did the very best she could for those children. Joan had a less than stellar childhood her mothers failed marriage, and her belief that Joans brother Hal would rescue the family. The famous hanger scene was more than an alcoholic tiff. Joan, Hal, and her mother. worked in a laundry when they were very poor. A shameful time for Joan. I think she walked many a mile in her moccasins before stilleto's and Hollywood glamour. Joan said, I know how to fight the hard way and Win. Not to shabby for the 1930's and 1940's years before the feminist movement. alr2903
