Now probably isn't the best time for a "white wedding" anyway - what with his mother's impending trial for drug trafficking. I wonder if he'll go back to high school now?

What a terrible tragedy for that baby. He barely has a chance in life. Teenage parents, family lineage that didn't exactly make the Dean's List, drugs... We can only hope some educational reforms will go into effect and offer him a break.

I read the other day that a small group of people in New Haven, CT held a fund raiser for Granny Palin in a Denny's to help launch her 2012 POTUS campaign. It's frightening to think that Americans can be that dumb, but looking around, there's more proof every day.

I think quite a few people predicted this. The whole wedding plan thing was a sham from the beginning, just an attempt at "legitimizing" things while Barbie was running for VP. Even in the horrifying event that McCain won I was still betting that the wedding would be off once the election was behind us, regardless of who won.

Still, even though I am not into men much under 35, Levi is one very handsome kid. Too bad he doesn't have the brains to match.

Great moments in Republican History

It reminds me of another spotlight fix up - when the Reagan's son Ron conspicuously got married after his ballet recital.

Well I wouldnt say its would have been a white wedding..except for the big black hem under her wedding dress. I am willing to bet that La Palin isnt happy her spawn let one get away that easily. I can hear the ol shot gun click now. And the other thing...didnt they even think of using a condom? She should have said ...no glove no love...he might have said ...i will pull it out baby before I make a mess ...things to ponder....

I am willing to bet that La Palin isnt happy her spawn let o

La Palin? Maybe she's unhappy 'cause she's secretly Cougar Palin! Nothin' says 'lovin' like somethin' from Mama's oven!

Those Republicans

...yes, I suppose she should have aborted the bastard like a good liberal would do. I am so frustrated with those republicans and their out of wedlock children. Damn those republicans.

Nobody is really criticizing Bristol. It's more a criticism of her mother, who preaches abstinence as the best form of birth control, but couldn't get her own daughter to believe in it enough to avoid an unwed pregnancy.

And I don't blame Bristol for refusing to marry a guy who had a self-proclaimed redneck jerk website, and whose mother has been arrested on drug charges.

Well its a combination of how Republicans are hipocrites in how they used to wrap themselves up in "family values" crowd. Once Palin brought out her unwed daughter that shut that faction down. Cant open your mouth when your own daughter got her kitty punched and someone left some baby batter in her. Unreal.

"Family values"?!?

I have a problems with "Family Values" because it has become a code word for "Christian", and the implication has become only one certain kind of family qualifies. A family can be many different things, not just Mom,Dad, Bobby and Sue. In reality it often Mom, Bobby and Sue, or any of a dozen different permutations.

> just out of curiousity, what "family values" do you find most objectionable? <

What Matt said.

Family Reseach Council, Focus on the Family and 1000 others, all with the exact same, horribly repressive, right-wing, theocratic agenda: bashing gay people, turning the clocks back on women's reproductive rights, and converting our free republic into a Christian version of Iran.

And while they spout off about "family values", these same groups haven't had a word to say about multinational corporations, job outsourcing, wage stagnation or any of the other actual destroyers of America's families and middle class since 1980. It's hypocrisy beyond comprehension.

Two Parent

Didn't get an answer to what family values you find objectionable, tend to agree with your generalizations about the misuse of the term, but to the specific question...

For example, how about "two parents" - Do you think young people should refrain from getting pregnant unless they can raise the child in a two parent family?

I think young people should refrain from getting pregnant - period. In this day and age there is no reason for an unwanted pregnancy. While a two parent home might be seen as an ideal, I don't see it as a need. The reality of a two parent home is often very different than the concept. I was raised in a two parent home, but my dad was mostly uninvolved, other than his income I don't think we'd have really know if he was not here. I'm sure there are many other families like ours was.

My feeling is that Bristol would have been much more unlikely too get preg. if sex and birth control was not held in disrespect by her mother/family. Study after study have shown that abstinence only programs don't work, this just reinforces that point.

actually

the problem is not Christian family values, but rather christianist family values - a code term for oppressing gays, women, interracial marriage and otherwise everyone who doesn't fit into their hateful agenda.

Now that the christianists and the Republicans are finally out of power (yay!) it is time to fight even harder for all those rights we were denied the last eight years.

It fascinates me how silent the conservatives are on the now proved fact that shrub & Co. took away their first and fourth amendment rights alongside of habeas corpus. Unbelievable, just unbelievable.

I normally don't comment on such things, but when I think of "Family Values" I think of a bunch of bible thumping control freaks that want you to live your life the way THEY dictate that you should live it. If you don't comply then they try to use the wrath of God, or the political system to scare you into compliance.
The scary part is that they believe all this crap.

Family values = using organized religion/fear/politcs/the bible to prop up and distribute one's own ignorance, bigotry and hatred. What values one's "family" holds dear may be somewhat different than those that another "family" holds dear, since families come in many, many different shapes, sizes and configurations. It's funny, with all the talk of "family values" in politics, I've never heard a formal definition given....just another buzzword to me, though I'm sure it's supposed to be mommy, daddy and their 2.3 children, dog and white picket fence.

Good for Bristol Palin for telling the BF to piss off. Of course, she shouldn't have gotten into this situation in the first place, but something tells me that frank discussions about sex and its consequences are not commonplace around the Palin family dinner table. Not that I disagree with Sarah Palin about abstinence for teens. But it's just not the reality, as many, many parents have learned as they take on the responsibility of raising the children of their teenagers.
