Hello all

Just to let you know that our BOL Bosch Classixx Dryer has packed up afyer 13 months. It was flashing lights and beeping, but the fault was not in the user manual. Having 'phoned Boshch today, they confirm the fault is a PCB fault and they are coming out to replace it tomorrow. Thankfully, the thing is still under warranty. Looking on the Bosch website, a call out is £89 and then parts are on top. Were it not under warranty, what would the avergae punter do? Scrap the machine and buy something like an Indesit for £130. Cheaper than the repair. An environmental catastophe.

I am very disappointed with this from B/S/H.

It seems that one really only does have Miele as an option nowadays. I have worked through them all now! Had a hopeless Hoover Classica, then killed a Zanussi within 2 years. The Hotpoint, to it's credit, did 5 or 6 years but with repairs and was never a great dryer.

I never felt like I wanted to pay silly money for a tumble dryer but given prior issues paid about £300 for the Bosch.

TBF, though, the matching Bosch washer is doing a sterling job and is my fave washer ever - yes, sorry, even compared with vintage machines!

Fingers crossed the repair goes well tomorrow.

Bosch Quality....

Sorry to hear about your Bosch Classixx not lasting long. My Grandparents Classixx dishwasher lasted just 2 years (used twice a week) before the PCB went. I was very dissapointed with this aswell, as i'd purposely sent them down the more quality route & yet it'd lasted no longer than a basic Indesit. The repair cost was prohibitive so they replaced it.

Theyve now got a Matsui one. I nearly died when they told me, but its got 5 year warranty (extra cost but still cheaper than buying another Bosch) and it looks like it might be made by Hoover from looking at some of the panels. Still not great but what can i say after Bosch's performance?! I won't be buying one thats for sure.
 
Thanks for your input guys. My parents also had (have) a Bosch dishwasher whose PCB failed (think was more like 3 or 4 years). They chose to fix and still have it aftter about 7 years, to be fair, though the repair was expensive.

Anyway - to keep you in the loop re dryer - the repair guys just didn't turn up yesterday. Got a text in the morning saying they would, then nothing!! Is this the expected standard nowadays?? I'm so resigned to it I can't get cross anymore.

I have a whole weekend of washing to do I might just go out and get a BOL Indesit this morning, White Knight or whatever (though I think they're ugly LOL). Any opinions re cheap dryers?

How Poor....

Is that a repairman from Bosch that didnt turn up? Thats awful. I guess an independant wouldnt get away with it coz theyd go out of business through poor reputation, but larger companies can largely hide it.

Re cheap dryers, id avoid Indesit. They seem to pop up on Ebay at very young ages with a whole list of various faults: heater, belt, squeaking, allsorts.

Beko are meant to have problems with some of their condensors where the clothes/sheets all end up tangled in a ball, so the outside is nearly on fire while the inside is still wet, so wouldnt touch them. Decent washers tho!

Id go with White Knight personally. Never heard any terrible reviews of them, they share their looks with old Whirlpool dryers from the 90s which were robust enough, and im told are built in the old Philips factory in Halifax.

If it's cheap youre after, id say White Knight, or if you can find one, a vented Tricity Bendix, are your best bet. Id rule out Electrolux Group condensors as electronic failure seems to happen abit on them too.

Could see if anything is ending on Ebay near to you also, save abit of £££
 
Hi Nick, soryr to hear about your Bosch dryer! I was thinking of getting a Bosch dryer after Christmas when I move into my own place (my sister has my AEG condenser now), but I might have second thoughts - especially as mum's died after 3 years after the heater failed; which would have cost us £110+ labour to repair. (Although I still find it suspicious that the washe rand dryer went so soon after each other, just after we had builders in, as when we had builders in they were kept outside under taupalin in November weather without our consent...).

Still thinking of a Bosch washer for when I move, especially after seeing yours in action a few months ago, much better than the one we had cycle wise. Altohugh I will opt for an 8 kilo model - but I'll probably just stick to the common sense route and stay with my Miele if I decide I don't want the extra capacity, though a large drum would be great for duvets - the new double duvet I've got from Ikea won't fit in the Miele - well it does, but it rubs against the seal and I wouldn't be comfortable washing it - whereas a big drum Bosch or perhaps LG would take it fine.

Talking of White Knight dryers, I'm not sure if you have an Asda Living near you, but ours is selling compact White Knights for £99, and full size vented White Knights for £110 at the moment - perhaps worth a look?

I'll look out for a White Knight then if i have to replace. Many thanks for the advice - I wouldn't have gone for that without your say. It is a shame that so many brands have issues...based on past exp I would now avoid all the major brands as have had all except Indesit.....

It seems to me sensible to either get a complete cheapie or a fab Miele but avoid the whole of the middle ground!

Yes, it was bonafide Bosch person who didn't show. Phoned up this AM - no apology, nothing, not bothered. Just rebooked for Tuesday and hope for the best type thing. Pathetic. If I were to employ such low standards at work I would be ashamed.

Better Brands

I know what you mean about only going for a Miele or a mega cheap machine.

My parents have had a few makes of appliances at home & i'm kinda drawing the same conclusion. We had a Hotpoint washer years ago & whilst it lasted long by todays standards (12 years) it had alot of repairs. When it came to replace it, we went with Indesit as money was tight, but it was spot on. We had it 5 years then it went to where Mum works & they kept it a further 3 years. We didnt get another though as quality had started to slip by this point, as it had with Hotpoint.

Instead we got an Electrolux, which did us fine. Lasted 7 years with just one call out at about a month old due to the mad spinning (the drum went all over the place). They replaced the motor under warranty but it did nothing for the fault!

We then decided to stick with Electrolux Group & got a Zanussi Essential in 2007, but quality is notable poorer. It still works well, but it sounds very gritty when there's a heavy load in it & there's a few like it creaping up for sale as spares already, at just 18 months-2 years old (ours is 2 years). Im not convinced it'll see 5 years, let alone the 7 of our last one.

Weve got a Miele dishwasher, which is excellent. Had that 6 years with no problem, but couldn't afford Miele at the time the washing machine broke (just before we went on holiday) but i think if the Zanussi does under 4 years, it makes perfect sence to go with Miele next time round, or just get a cheap Beko, as these seem to last as long or longer than the latest offerings from what i think are the best middle ground makes, Zanussi & Whirlpool.

For my own place i bought a 1988 Zanussi FL1012 washer & a mid 90's Zanussi Electronic Sensor Dryer, got them both off ebay. Washer was £15 & dryer was £65, and both are working 2 years down the line. If you can cope with retro looks in a modern kitchen, you can do alot worse than Ebayi feel!
 
Bosch tumble dryer failing after 13 months? That's terrible.

Something isn't right as far as the quality is concerned. It seems that there might be some cost-cutting going on.

Even older models are still going as we speak but this is awful news especially for the company.

Shame on you Bosch!

a Bosch dryer failing? Wow, I thought they were built to last. I would have suggested Bosch as a choice but you have a problem with a Bosch dryer. Do what FL1012 is doing, go for a retro, they last long, and still go strong :)

I wouldn't replace a Bosch with an Indesit though...
 
Just my two cents...

I have an indesit tumble dryer it is 1 year 10 months old and I have never had a problem with it. It dries quickly, gently and its quite quiet. I only ever use low heat as thats plenty. Towels from my 1600 Hotpoint dry in approx 60 mins on low!

The model number of mine is IS60V. The current offerings have new doors and fascias, but I am led to believe the innards are the same.

Another plus to Indesit/Hotpoint tumble dryers is that they do a decent job with reverse action. White Knights, Electrolux and such do a stupid 10 minute tumble, with a 10 second reverse which is really no use to anyone! The indesits do an equal amount of tumbling in either direction approx 2mins one way then 2 min reverse.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck with your dryer woes!

Sorry to here that Nick, not good news at all...if sticking with vented, then can reccommend the AEG dryer, John from Brum has had one a while and its really been put through its paces, very quiet in action...same with the similar Zanussi model

The other model I would look at would be the Gorenje from independant and euronics stores etc, two year guarantee,

Saying that I`ve sold many Hotpoint TVM`s and had no problems either to date!!
 
Update

Hi all

Repairman showed up today and fixed it by replacing the PCB Board. Had the machine not come with two year guarantee, yes the repair would have been uneconomical at nearly £200.

Our tumble dryer is in an unheated external building, and the guy gave us the impression this could have contributed to the fault. He said he put in a `double insulated' board to give it more protection from the elements???? WTF????

He also told me off for using Bounce sheets - damn, should have hidden those.

Anyway, thanks for all the advice.

I think the engineer meant the Elemental 'elements' of wind, water, etc. Cold out-houses allow moisture to condensate upon delicate electronics, causing corrosion of the copper tracks and solder.

He probably installed a board in a plastic box.

(Has anyone noticed that if you fill in the subject drift box before logging in, it disappears when log-in is achieved? Most peculiar!)
 
I have an Indesit drier IS60V I have had it for 4 years and no problem. We have it in the conservatory and it in either the extreame heat of the sunny weather of the extreame cold in the winter. I have not had one problem with it. Only when it was new I ran it for first time and it become extreamly noisy like something is getting 'rough' inside but since that beginning it has been fine and dries the clothes without the problem.

We have an AEG washer which is good, the only problem is that it spins unbalanced a lot and the water jet pump makes loud noises sometimes.

I would not rule out an Indesit from experience, mine has been fine and as said below it is in the conservatory in extreame temps and it keeps on going and going.
 
Just came back from Stockholm where my friend's Bosch pair is going strong after five years and no problems (it's a condenser dryer....he DOES have a vent but it's in the front of his house and he doesn't like the plum of steam showing to the neighbors).
