Have any of you ever tried Calgonite dishwasher detergent in the 70s before it became lower phosphate Formula 211 Calgonite? It went from 12% phosphates to 8.7% phosphates and greatly dropped in cleaning power. As the 12% formula,I have yet to this day to use a detergent that produced the glisten, gleam, gloss and glow on dishes, especially on glassware.Had you all had the same experience with it?

My piccalo,my piccalo

Or would adding STPP to today's detergents produce simlar results? Perhaps that the machine was an RCA Whirlpool with the Filter Stream washing system and that piccalo style spray arm had something to do with it.

David you are so right, we used Calgonite for years and it did a fantastic job. Sure wish that we could still get it.

If I'm not mistaken it's still sold in Canada.

Once in a blue moon, I'd see it in our local liquidation outlet.

Calgonite.

There is another AD for Calgonite, but for washers. Can be found when you look at the above YouTube link. I dare not post it as it is a NASTY foul-mouthed spoof in Greek. See how many words you recognize.

In the meantime, I'm blushing.

O M G !

Ohhh---

Real Calgonite was my favourite dishwasher detergent.

Loved how it cleaned, loved how it smelled.

For some reason, it was not a favourite of my Ma's, so we only had it when I bought it with my own money.

I was horrified when it went to "211," and very very sad when it was discontinued entirely.

Calgonite was one of the first, if not the first, machine dishwasher cleaning agent. It was more of a blend of water softeners at first since those were the chemicals the company sold and because there were not yet good, low-sudsing surfactants. In many old dishwasher ads and instructions, there is a step in the process where it says to add the water conditioner because detergents as we know them were not yet marketed. Old Sunbeam Coffeemasters had instructions for filter cloth maintenance that said the cloth should be boiled in Calgonite once a month or so and the C-20, in which filter cloths were mandatory, came out before WWII. WWII helped the development of synthetic detergents because the fats used to make soap were needed for explosives.

I still have a 12 cent off coupon for FINISH that must be 25 or 30 years old.

Calgonite is still available in Canada. I use it a fair amount as it is quite cheap and works great in Victoria's water. It is distributed by Reckitt Benckiser(Canada) Inc. It is a low phosphate formula that contains no scent.

Calgon and Calgonite

As far as I can make out, Calgonite is Finish, Electrasol and Neophos dishwasher detergent by another name.

Calgon, on the other hand, is a water softening treatment, to be used in washing machines in hard water areas, to prevent the limescale problems that gunge them up.
