I may be the very last person on the planet to learn about this design, but I found one while thrift shopping today and thought it was cool. My kitchen is kind of late '50s through early '70s, and finding certain present-day necessities with the right retro look is not always easy. I had been doing without a banana holder, because those cheap white plastic ones are dog-butt-ugly, and the wooden ones aren't the right look for chez Sandy.
This one - a Pantry Works design from Spectrum - is chrome-plated steel rods, and it looks like what a banana holder would have looked like in 1958 if anyone had had a banana holder then, which they didn't. It blends well with my chrome and other silver-metal stuff.
I'm kind of liking it. And it's nice to have the bananas up off the counter. If anyone envies me, it's still available new from Amazon, albeit for a bit more than mine cost:
