Two thoughts:

"I was telling someone at work about my vintage Magnavox stereo. They were like, "umm.. you still listen to records?" Nevermind the wonderful sound and the groovy Micromatic record changer that senses the size of each record by tapping with the tonearm. To them, it's just an old record player. Sigh.
People don't understand."

Yeah, I can just hear that "umm" Jason, and I can see the dumba$$ look they probably gave you right now. You know, the little smile like "hey, this guy is crazy". I wouldn't dream of saying something like this, even if I was totally not into what the person was talking about. Whatever happened to mom's old adage of "if you can't say anything nice..." or my take on it "learn to shut up!"
I don't know if I mentioned it, but prior to receiving my big Motorola I called a few vintage stereo repair places to have someone lined up should I need a repair. (I didn't).
I called a guy who had a website and is in San Diego. All the guy could basically do is tell me that no one wants big consoles any more. I said, I know, they are hard to find. Then he started to tell me that they all had sub par components in them, which is bull. My Motorola wails, I can't even put the volume past three and it has so much base and power. Of course, it is a different animal than say, a vintage tube Marantz, but I like it just fine. Finally, the guy up and asked, why did you buy a thing like that for?
I never know what to say to people like this, but I tell you, I am running out of patience. They always catch me off guard.
Another example, I mentioned I went to that Chrysler Spring Fling car show out here. At the show, there was a really nice restored 1957 Chrysler Imperial convertible. You may remember that I have a 1957 Imperial four door. So I complimented the owner on his car, and asked him how it drove, as I am very curious, mine has never run since I had it. He tells me it rides like a dream.
So then I thought I would share with him. I said "I have a Crown 4 door, and I need to totally restore it". And the guy kind of goes "Oh, these are very expensive to restore, I wouldn't even bother with a four door". As if only his car is "the kind", and mine is just junk.
I was just stunned, really did not know what to say. You go to these things thinking that there is a sense of community. All I could think of was wow, did he just say that?
I just looked at my son and said "let's go", and kind of threw my hands up, I don't know if he saw me. What a pri**.
I tell you folks, I am going to start putting people in their place. When his friend next to him started bragging about how he had spent $5000 on his chrome bumpers alone, maybe I should have just said, "well, only an idiot would spend that!" but I didn't even think of it until later.
I think I know what I am going to say from now on when someone says the above.
Just give them a "You know something? You have no idea what you are talking about."
See how that goes.
