Yet another iteration of KA that I've not seen before.  It appears to be a 21 series Imperial from the looks of the panel, but I've never seen one with plastic buttons.  My KUDI21 had chrome buttons and a china guard.

 

Maybe it's a series 20.  We saw recently where series 18 models below Superba had buttons found on series 20 machines, so maybe series 20 models below TOL got 21 series buttons.

Likely is a Custom model (21 series?), with the China Guard possibly considered a "step-up" feature at the time so the Custom wouldn't have it.

The timer markings and selector button cycles/options appear to be identical to those on an Imperial.  Could it be that series 21 Customs were only cosmetically different from the Imperials (with the exception of the china guard)? 

 

I thought Steve T's series 21 Custom only had two selector buttons instead of five.  Is it possible that the subject machine is a series 22?

Ralph, I BELIEVE SteveT's 21 Custom you are referring to may have been after the Whirlpool acquisition.  I believe the two buttons were for water heating and energy saver dry.  I had the same immediate thought as you.

There's our answer.  Apparently all the functions of an Imperial with cheaper trim inside and out.

All Customs are not created equal!

I don't want to confuse you but I actually had 2 different Custom models..Both were KDC21's but one was a early non Hobart KDC-21D which had the cycles like the control panel above, had Chrome buttons and it also had the china guard and the 16 way adjustable top rack with the flex-o-dividers. This was a"D"erivative machine which had the upgraded features of the Imperial and Superbas.

I also had the regular Custom which had the two buttons..Start and Energy Saver Dry. But that also had the 1400 watt sump heater and the heat light on the console and was a Hobart built unit. The D model had the heater above the sump like the one above and did not stop to preheat the water. The cycle selections on it were Rinse and Hold, Normal Cycle and Light China. There was no Pots and Pans cycle on it.

Oddly enough, the Hobart Custom lacked the China Guard too.
Since I knew that my Mother in law would not use nor abuse the machine, I saw no reason to change the top rack to the adjustable one and If she used it at the most a dozen times before she passed away, I would have been surprised.

I guess when it comes to the 21 series and the transition over to Whirlpool, all bets are off with regard to features and components across the board.  Caveat emptor!

Not to worry!

Any 21 series whether the earliest or the last ones built will not disaapoint their users! It is a great machine and will still outclean many other machines out there and fairly quickly at that! I do prefer the Hobart units with the sump heaters because of the preheat at the start of the cycles but the Custom D model I had did a good job of heating the water. It would always give you at least a 10 degree bump in the temp of the water with the above sump heater based on the normal factory fill.
