KDS-17 kitchenaid by hobart HELP!

I have a kds-17 - and from the sounds of it - if I am going to get any help - its HERE!!

I think that is awesome - that so many of you love the old stuff and are willing to keep it alive.

Here is the issue....about half way through the rinse cycle a loud grinding noise is occurring. It is coming from the front panel - more specifically the control board I believe.

I haven't timed it - but I bet it is about a minute long - and it is LOUD!

Please help? what could it be?

Drain valve Noises?

Does the noise come on whenever the machine is draining which can be quite a few times during a full cycle?
The drain valves in these machines would often get very noisy and were replaced by a different design as the years and designs progressed. Please let us know when the noise occurs and I bet we get it all fixed up for you. As you may have noticed on this forum, the 17 and 18 machines are considered by many to be the best machines ever!
Just have to keep yours going for another 20 years.

Rinse agent solenoid

Steve, since it only comes on during then rinse section could it be the RA dispensing solenoid?

I Dunno, But....

....Your machine does not have a control board. It has an electrically-driven mechanical timer, which is a very reliable technology. Even better, if the timer should be the source of your problem (which I don't know - I'll leave that to the experts here), someone here should be able to help you locate a new one.

Old KitchenAids are simple, reliable machines that can be repaired. Just relax and someone here will help you figure out the answer - there is not really anything to worry about.

Ah yes, but also...

Forgot about the rinse dispenser and they were noise makers too!. Hard to find them as they were replaced by the bimetal dispensers when the 19's came out.

BTW, the Superba timer is located under the tank on the crossmember behind the lower panel so it can't be a buzzing timer. But that dispenser could be the culprit and it is easy enough to isolate if need be.

Okay guys....so I timed the entire rinse cycle and I video tapped most of it.

I will attempt to upload the section where the noise occurs to you tube. Until I get the time to do that - I think who ever said rinse agent solenoid is the winner - but is still just a guess on my part.

The entire rinse cycle was 11 minutes - during each of the drain times - there was no additional noise.

The awful noise ONLY occurs for exactly ONE minute from minute 7 to 8 of the rinse cycle....and it comes from the door area.

I am still assuming that it comes from the door area - because while it was making the noise I pushed on the front panel and the noise was distorted by my pushing on it.

My Dad said...that sounds like a solenoid....

Can anyone confirm what is going on in minute 7 to 8 of the rinse cycle?

and how do I change out a solenoid...and where do I get one?

Actually - I was just thinking...I never use the rinse agent option - so I guess I could just disable the solenoid part - YES?

Yes Alan I would guess the rinse agent dispenser also, the thing to do would be to unplug it and see if the noise goes away, you really do not need a RA dispenser anyway, I never use them in any of my DWs and always have great looking DRY glasses.

How do I go about unplugging the rinse agent dispenser?

Unpluging RA Dispenser

You will have to remove the DWs upper outer door panel, there are 2 screws on each side visible when the door is completely open. Remove the screws close door and lift the panel off and you will see the RAD, you only need to remove the white wire to disable it.
