Would anyone have, or know of, a donor KDS-20 with good racks? One of the tines on ours is being held on by the smallest bit of plastic coating and we've been touching up elsewhere with Re-Rack when needed.

Help!!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance, Chuck
(and yes, before anyone else says it, it IS unusual for me to be looking for nice racks!)

apples and oranges

As you can see in the picture, the bottom racks are identical but the top rack lacks the flex-o-dividers and the 16 position height adjusting mechanism.
You will be able to put the height adjusting hardware on this top rack so you would have some flexibility but won't be able to fold the tines down like your current one.
You will have to drill the rivets out on your old mechanism and either get stainless rivets or small stainless hardware for the changeover to the other rack.

Are the kds18 racks the same?

Not completely.  The original KDS18 rack didn't have as long an upper wash arm that effectively reached the corners as what came out on the 19 and subsequent series.  So the 18 would not wash the corners nearly as well.

Shorty Arm

When I got my first KDS-18, I was in heaven to have that second wash arm.

I eventually swapped out a 20 rack for the 18. Yeah, it was better but I really never had a problem with the upper rack cornors.

What I could never understand is Why, Why, Why, Hobart never came up with a better Overhead Spray Arm to replace the Constant Rinse ???

My 20 cleans great, but I notice the 18 is better.

Yeah, I did notice that the foldable tines were not there but was hoping the rest of the rack would be the same. Doesn't matter though as this d/w was already sold by the time I replied to the seller (it was an older CL ad).

Bob- it looks like the cage under the upper arm snaps off on the 20. Would it do the same on the 18, then maybe the wash arm and cage from the 20 could be put on a rack from an 18? I would imagine the water feed would be about the same since it probably goes to the center of the arm on either one?

The plan for now is that we're gonna remove that tine and hit the metal with rust reformer, then plasti-dip or Re-Rack. Good thing we have the Power Shower to substitute as a daily driver until we get this sorted out!

Thanks for the continued help,
Chuck

I've read that the upper arms are interchangeable between the 18 and 20 series.

I wonder if maybe Hobart abandoned the Constant Rinse because items on the upper rack would get in the way and impede or impair its operation.  Just last night I did a load in the Classic Supreme and I had some large items in the top rack that were barely scraping against the top of the tub.  I'd have had to do some major re-arranging if a Constant Rinse mechanism was present, because using the height adjustment for the top rack wasn't an option due to large items below.

Just an observation.

I know all about the Constant Breaking But...

Look at Maytag, Ge's Power Shower, WP and Kenmores had upper spray arms that have withstood the test of time.

The Original Constant Rinse was Very Flimsy and Delicate. One shot with a mixing bowl or something and it would be Toast.

Stevet sent me some "replacements" that Hobart came up with. It's like a Rotary Impeller that the water spays on and it spins. Similar to the one on my '05 KenWhirl with the Power Module.

You need one of those "Yibble Eliminator".

The Superbas and probably yours too. Look at the side of rack for that white knob.

Ralph,

I was a tid-bit worried about the constant rinse being an issue with tall items when I installed the KDS-18 last week. However, everything I've thrown into the 18 that was thrown into 19 has not impeded with the constant rinse in any way. Having the tops of dishes on the upper rack washed and exiting with yibble free results is a big added plus, thanks to that small but powerful constant rinse!
