Hi folks. I'm a newbee here and have a question about the nylon part below the wash arm. Mine has fallen apart and the bronze snap ring is in pieces. The water pressure pushes the bronze bearing up and prevents the lower rack from sliding out. It's been flawless for 38 yrs. Is it time?

Sounds to me like the Wash Arm Support..
<span style="font-family: helvetica;">I would wait for one of the experts to confirm but this sounds like an issue I had with one of my KA machines and it was the Wash Arm Support. I would imagine you can still find these for your 20 machine.</span>

Yes, I would agree with Ralph. The wash arm support sounds like it is shot. Start checking on Ebay for a new one. Don't bother with a used one as it will probably do the same thing as yours with continued use.
And while you are at it, you should replace the wash arm as well. That way both parts can wear in together and give you another 40 years of service!

It should keep working if you just replace the washer arm and wash arm support as mentioned.
Make sure the machine is working well overall and not leaking underneath. You probably can keep this machine running for a number of years yet, it will not go 38 more years without major work and a lot of it.
One of the most common problems on dishwashers as they age is, they don’t get enough water in them to do a proper job due to the time fill system, new inlet valve is almost always necessary by this age if it hasn’t already been replaced do check the water level.

Might have a used one for you
Just replaced my KDI-20 this week, carcass will be in my metro-west Boston driveway for another week if you want to consider a.used part. Have no idea what condition it's in but can take a photo once the rain stops and the sun comes up.

The white bushings are not removable from the stainless steel shaft they’re permanently assembled. You have to it’s the round black plastic thing secured with four screws underneath filter .
I can see from your picture that the bronze bushing has come out of your wash arm. That part is supposed to be permanently assembled into the wash arm, if your washer arm still in good condition, remove the bushing from the stainless steel shaft, any epoxy it back into the wash arm otherwise, the wash arm will need to be replaced. It’s not meant to be operating this way.
It looks like this dishwasher and reply number six ihas quite a mineral build up. I can’t be doing that great job on the glassware with that kind of build up you need to be using hotter water, better detergent and probably a lot more of it.

The bronze bushing from the wash arm hub came out of thew wash arm and is on the stainless-steel shaft of the support. That bushing is supposed to stay in the wash arm. And it almost looks like the lower bronze ring is still there.
If i were you, I would get the support assembly as well as a wash arm as it would be a good investment for the future.

Your upper wash arm support has been replaced once already. I never saw an original one with the plastic bushing, those came later on.
Agree with Steve, new upper support and wash arm. I would do a seal and impeller if there's no leaks below the motor. When the seal goes, it drips water down the motor shaft and takes out the motor bearings and it's new motor time. Perform a water level check to make sure the inlet valve screen isn't plugged. When the dishwasher stops filling up on the main cycle, stop the dishwasher and let the water drain down for a minute or so. Pull the lower rack and note the water level. It should be just above the the top of the removable filter screen. If it's lower than this, you need a new inlet valve.

What's the difference between 4162724 and 241549?
241549 is the old part#, 4162724 is the new part#.
The original part# for the lower rack is E-116157 but it was superseded many times over the years. You can use a lower rack from any kitcheniad dishwasher well into the 1990's and still have a factory appearance.
