Probably not since the 1950's or maybe early 1960's was the release of new car models in America such a big deal as well. People (entire familes, not just the men), got on their Sunday best to go down into down and see the "new for 1956 Chevrolet".
While people may not have been as "affluent" as today, it really is hard to compare the 1950's era with 2007. The post war years were VERY good for most Americans. Certinaly those who were around and suffered during the Depression saw the 1950s as a time of plenty. Between the GI Bill, war production factories now churning out consumer goods of all sorts, and so forth things were pretty good. People also then tended not to carry as much debt. Today, most people are only living the lifestyle of their fathers or grandfathers by heavy use of credit.
The 1950's were about marketing to a sort of new American affluence and how new techology would "free" people from the old hard living ways of the past.
