It is weird to me that these machines are in their 28th year. I always liked the look and performance of these Kenmores. This matching set happened to pop up about 2 miles from me. The house is being remodeled. The machines look pretty good. The washer fired up and had a pretty nice and quiet spin. They should be fun to play with. I didn’t run the serial number on the dryer but the washer is from October 1997.

Late 90s top-of-the-line Kenmore direct drive pair

Great save Jon these were the most advanced conventional top load washer and dryer pair you could buy in the US probably in the world in the late 90s and they were pretty durable. I still have a customer that has a washer like yours that’s still working away

Jason and I saved a black pair with a gas dryer a couple years ago for the museum. I think there’s even an extra pair that Jason has in black as well.

The earlier version of this washer even had a hidden button where you could do suds return if you have the suds saver accessory that mounts in the laundry tub.

What machines are getting pushed out of your laundry room for these? Lol.

Even though I grew up in the 2000’s, don’t remember seeing these. Definitely a great save on a not so common Kenmore direct drive.

You have a great pair of machines, Jon.

I still use my dryer with one minor repair (gas valve coil ignition solenoid). Compared to today's technology, you cannot find a dryer to do what this one does.

It's a beast, yet a gentle Lady.

Nothing new under the sun ???

YES there IS, at least for me. I have never seen a Wrinkle Guard on a washer. Would love an explanation. That control panel is tricked out to the max. Perhaps that is where the LG engineers got the idea.

BRILLIANT ! Larry, and ~

Thank You. I could not imagine what a wrinkle guard could possible do on a washer. Wondering if that is the only machine in which it has appeared.

CONGRATS!! Hope you have fun with them. Looks like the electronic controls on them hold up well over the years. Those Whirlpool-built, Kenmore-badged washers and dryers from the 90's are truly workhorses! We had a matching pair from about 1992 with manual controls. Repairman looked at the dryer about 7 years ago; said it would be better to replace it. He said to keep that washer though; it is worth fixing; there is nothing on the market now that works as well or is as dependable. Ours has that same agitator; it really circulates the clothes through the water. Everything comes out clean.

It would be fun to see and hear the stepped-up spin, and compare it to the Frigidaire versions. Speaking of which, the manual says this beast has the triple action agitator that pulsates during large loads; the agitator senses when to activate it. Reading the pdf, this Kenmore is one smart cookie, full of surprises.

Thanks again, Larry for the exciting read and Glenn for the intel.

She was durtayyy…

Broke it down a bit to get in and clean it up. You can always tell when a machine lived a cold-wash life with cheap additives. It was like mud and it was gross. Scrubbed everything really well. Figured out the dispenser situation and got those all scrubbed out as well. Only thing I broke was a retaining tab off of the little plastic guard that lives under the dispenser hose connections.

It runs great. Quiet Pak Plus is a really nice feature. Should be a fun one to play with.
