About the machine in the ad:
The washer Kenny found is either a 1981 Kenmore 70, OR a 1982 Kenmore 70.
These are fairly rare as compared to the 1983 model that I bought. Mine was in Kenmore's best sellers of the 1980s, along with a couple other models of the belt-drive generation and a couple DD models from late 1986 and on.
There is no way to tell from the outside if this is an '81 or an '82, but if it is an '81, it would be cool to have as not only is it a suds model, but the '81 version (along with its non-Pre-Wash cousin) was THE ONLY belt-drive ever offered by Sears to have a manual lint filter and a Dual-Action agitator together. It had been MANY years since a 70-series machine had a manual filter.
Apparently this didn't go over well in the market, as this 1981 model debuted in summer 1981, and was replaced in Spring 1982 by a self-cleaning version, otherwise identical. By this time Sears was keeping models routinely for several years.
What I liked about this model was the four water levels - there is just too much of a gap between medium and ex. high in my experience in machines from this time period. Medium barely fills the basket half-way up, whereas in the mid to late 70s the medium setting, then said to be for the average load, filled the large tubs to the second row of perfs from the top of the basket, which is much more accomodating.
The dryer that Kenny posted above as a match is also an 81/82 model, and is otherwise exactly what I bought to go with my 70-series, other then mine having the big door opening.
