Curbed appliances
Fortunately, a "curbed" appliance here in Los Angeles will often sit unmolested for days, especially if it's put out after trash day. Often it will sit until the next trash day, at which time scavengers who go around in trucks and pick up appliances and dead water heaters will get them, or the person has called the City who send out special trucks to pick up large items like furniture & appliances. And even the scavengers take the whole appliance, they don't try to break it up on the spot, and one can often rescue an appliance if it's seen on one of their trucks, since even at $25, it's more $ than they would get from the whole truckload of stuff they are carrying.
