WCI/Kenmore stacked W/D
Fine if you want a fun toy to play with but not worth a damn as a daily driver. Remember it is a WCI Kenmore not a WP. I'm not sure how many years they made these but I know they were not reliable. Nonetheless a unique and fun machine. If you want a Stack for daily use go for the 27" WP DD stack.

My pair of Maytags aren't (to me) fun or cool, but they do a nice job and so much faster than our former Front Loader GE set. I've been mulling over the idea of getting a stacked set, but nearly everything produced looked ugly, to me, save for the older sets. 27" WP DD - will search for those and see how they look. I don't NEED a stacked unit, but it would free up some space here.
Many companies were sold, merged(is WCI now part of Electrolux?) or disbanded. And because it's easy to say, most of what is made today pales in quality and reliability, it gets tougher to identify what is reliable and good as you go back to the gradations of manufacturing transitions and quality during the cost-reductions periods.
Anyways, thanks for the comment on this fun and unreliable unit. With so many potholes out there, I always learn something and enjoy the opinions. Eventually, I'll get to laughing at my own, probably.

WCI...while not the best choice, this one I have never seen, but a lot of cool functions, and some have had a lot of good years out of them....it can vary...
I like the Maytag stacked.....prefer the digital(times and options are variable), but mechanical controls are nicely featured as well, available in newton or orbital drive tranny.....one advantage is these come apart to install and transport, most others are all-in-one, add weight of two machines together, plus the size, taller than most fridges...
Whirlpool 27" models are also nicely featured, and have a decent capacity, the shorter, fatter tub seem to rollover the clothes better....but again, one big unit to move...
probably the best feature of these is the raised dryer, right at eye level...and two machines in the place of one...nice advantages

I've had two of the Kendare versions. This one gets used every day and hasn't pissed me off! I have noticed that the newest Kenmore version seems to be way different than mine. My current one has the Kenmore "quiet pack", holds a butt load and is quick. One disappointment is water temp selector; Warm Rinse is the spray rinse only. Deep rinse is cold. Oh yeah, and the ATC bugs me. But wait, the less than "full" full water level bugs me. But on the other hand it has a cool hanger rod thing!

Yogitunes ; definitely, I would never buy the joined at birth and non-separatable units.

Ovrphil, my current one is newer. 27" wide.
yeah....the Kenmores filled on 3/4 of the way up for a full load....that can be fixed easily....the Whirlpool was the same way....a simple screw adjustment fises that....
AND theres that little trick they throw in there of the WARM rinse, the deep fill is COLD.....the final spins sprays are WARM.....only effective if your water heater is close by, by the time the hot water reached the machine, the sprays were done....unique, but useless......suprised to find this on the stackables....
depending on the model and year produced, you may or ma not find thee little annoying issues....
the Maytag digital from the 80's is what I have, I did adjust the water level some, the temps are true to what comes out of the tap...not sure about the mechanical machines...someone who has one will have to chime in on their experience....I found two of them, paid 50.00 each

Yogitunes: I LOVE your Maytag, and the price you paid....adjustable water level and easy ...was that in a manual the owners never saw? 27" is the way to go, for load capacity...windowed dryer door would be kind a nice mod both for function and to lighten the top-heavy architecture. Do they make windowed dryer doors for these or is it a weekend project?

check out my profile pics, theres more photos of the machine there......note, I can change wash, rinse and spin times...although these are a one speed machine.....Gentle and PermPress have pauses during the wash....I have an electric version, which for an odd reason, has two plugs....I also have the 50hz setup.....they are standard capacity, but still hold alot...
a windowed door can possibly be found, they were on the stacked double dryers in the laundromats....just have to locate one.....that might be a thought for me as well....
on a Whirlpool, they have a two speed motor.....and there are models with a windowed dryer door, they do show up from time to time....gas or electric, one plug operates everything

STACKED! NOT STACKABLE!!
I have a problem with folks claiming that they have a stackable washer dryer when in fact they have a stacked washer dryer. Stack able means you can stack them OR keep them seperate or apart. Very misleading as well as stupid on the seller's part.

I have the same Maytag that Martin has in my Sandy Struck Shore house as a matter of fact that is the only appliance that survived...(because the motor was upsdide down the belts got a little wet we only had about 3 inches of water...and where the washer is it is on a 2 inch mud tile floor in a closet) very surprised no RUST underneath...cleaned up and installed new belts after storm...
CYCLE TIMES - I found that you can adjust times while the washer is filling you can bring the wash time up to 19 minutes, you can do a rinse only and bring that wash time up to 8 minutes and you can do a spin only and bring that up to 8 minutes also. As far as changing within the cycle cant be done must be done during fill at beginning of cycle. The only thing I need to attempt is raising the water level.
PIC below before Sandy.. well is the same now was installed 6 weeks ago and works like a champ and as Martin said it can hold a lot even though standard Maytag tub...it definitely is a work horse used constantly during summer at least 3 loads a day. Also used weekends in winter.

right at your back door...this is a start, but shop around.....Maytags all came as 27inch units.....
Whirlpool called theirs ThinTwins......27 inch units had the controls above the dryer door.....24 inch units had their controls below the dryer door.....

Actully the Magtags come apart easily. Makes them much easier to move.
