What a sad note in an otherwise perfect day.

The life of one of the most liberal senators in recent history is drawing to a close.

I pray for his recovery, but fear we are seeing the end of an era...just as a new day dawns.

A great man, the brother of two truly great Americans.

He apparently recovered consciousness before he reached the ambulance, so it wasn't as bad as it might have seemed.

But with a malignant brain tumor, which can't be cured, his days would seem to be numbered.

What is really upsetting is how some on the Right (not here, of course) have continued to throw mud at him over Chappaquiddick and his weight and past drinking.

I expect he'll have to step down from the Senate in the next few months.

When he arrived at the hospital he was able to speak fine and respond to questions from healthcare staff. As of the report more than an hour ago, he was doing well, joking, getting some rest, and looking to return to work (hopefully) tomorrow.

Seizures like this are part of his disease.

Good news, bad news

I was concerned when the first images showed him in a center creased fedora with the brim snapped down in front. Who put that on his head? Now, I think a fedora is a fine hat, one that can be worn any day -- but for a senator at an inauguration? A homburg, or a bowler, a distinguished hat with brim snapped up (and worn no other way) - that would have been a proper hat - for the occasion.

Correction

I mentioned above his center crease fedora had the brim snapped down, I meant snapped up. Only rappers snap the brim up on a fedora. That was very disturbing - no wonder he convulsed.
