ok so ive just refitted a new fan to a kirby legend II which hasnt been used for at least 16 years, it works absolutely fine with the smaller attachments but when i try to use the main brush roll, it does not engage the motor, it lights up but nothing happens, can someone help?

Sounds like it is not engaging the switch that is located below the opening where the fan is, or the switch is broken/mis-wired.  Or the piece of metal that engages the switch on the floor cleaner is broken.

switch

well ive tried using the one off my heritage I and that does the same thing, so im really not sure, but as i said every other attachment seems to work ok, the switch isnt broken either

The rug nozzle...

Engages the low speed, the hose the high speed, maybe the switch is bad or the low speed windings of the motor are bad.

Simple solution?  With the hose or rug cleaner off  and the vac plugged in and turned on, carefully press down on the switch using the method of your choice -finger, screwdriver, paint stirrer.  First position should be low for carpet, pressing further will be high for tools.  Of course use caution as the blades will be exposed and the shaft turning, but it is a quick and easy test.
