I have a Goodwill Clearance store just a few blocks away and went there this morning to find a neat Kirby upright vacuum cleaner model number G7D.It was in mint shape except for the mass amounts of pet hair that was built up in the beater bar assembly and some foreign pieces of celophane.I was not that familiar with this unit at all but, paid them the asking price($9)and took it home setting it upright on the metal basket I have on the rear of my Schwynn Strapping it down to keep it from falling.
once I got it home,I imediately removed the beater bar attachment and soaked it in hot water.I cleaned the wooden beater/brush bar by hand and took the original bag out. I machine washed the outer sleave/bag and air dried it.I put everything back ogether, placed a new bag in and THIS VACUUM ROCKS!!!!

It is self propelled, quiet, extreamly powerful and easy to maintain.I am beside myself.I tried to post this on the proper website but am unable to sign on.Does anyone know the age and/or value of this particular unit?If so,please let me know. Thanks!

Chuck

I'll probably be corrected on this later (WHATEVER), but I believe the G7 was the last model before the Sentria, the current model. It's either known as the Ultimate G or the Diamond G. I've had a few of the G models, but I'm in a 4000+ square foot 2 story home with carpeted stairs and 2 dogs who don't like things that move by themselves. LOL! Long story short, every time I found another G, the new wore off rather quickly. I guess you figured that the Kirby G vacuums are rather willful if you don't rein them in. Hope you enjoy the machine. For what you paid, you STOLE it!

BTW, you may have trouble keeping the outer bag attached after you washed it because there is a plastic tie that tensions the bag to the machine. You can always go to one of those "depot home" places and buy plastic wire ties in the electrical wiring department. One of those will do the same thing.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there were two models of G7s, the G7 and the G7D. The D standing for the Diamond edition. My mom has the Ultimate G (G7) and its taken quite a beating. We have a 4,000 square foot 2 story home as well, but only one dog. The annoying thing for me is that all the floors are hard wood so I almost never get to use the carpet attachment!

Since it has such a useful 20ish foot hose, that thing gets used to vacuum everything despite my warnings. I'm betting it'll break soon as it's being used to vacuum up rocks, batteries, small toys, cement dust, etc...

Ultimate G

robert, you're exactly right!! That photo per ebay is the exact same as what I found. It realy cleaned up well and I actualy tore the brush assembly completely apart.Whoever osent it to GW left a new belt hanging on the handle! As I had taken it apar,I thoroughly cleaned it out.It is so neat that it can be either manualy used or you may use the self propelsion which makes it feal like it's floating on air.you can adjust the head up or down depending on the thickness of the pile and the brush is adjustible to three different settings,The headlite is bright and the bags used are Kirby's "Micron Magig" w/Hepa filter. You know I also have the Hoover Z700(U9145-900) and a Sears Kenmore Progressive model(made by Pannasonic).I got the Hoover(a $799 model) at Home Depot when I worked there years ago for only $99 on clearence and the Kenmore which needed a new power hose that the cord is connected to,at The Salvation Army for $18. The previous owner had put the plug that feeds power to the beater bar in backwards causing a short that melted the prong head. The replacement part was purchased here at Sears nService center for $12.That model was available at Sears for $399.All 3 work great but the latter 2 have their issues.

The Kenmore works great but the hepa filter bag is small and needs to be changed more frequently then most others. But,to me,that's fine because the sucktion on that model is among the best I've ever seen.

The Hoover has had some serious issues. I took it to the local Hoover service center and waited 3 months for a replacement part. The main drive motor along with a new transmission!!The shop owner was so mad at Hoover's lack of comunicating with him that he gave me a brand new one he had on the showfloor in a box in place of my original model with a full 2 year in shop parts and labor warranty!!He said he'd use mine for replacement parts and that it was probably the worst model Hoover ever made! This one , so far, works fine but----
The Kirby is the only vacuum cleaner I ever had that actualy pulls the carpet up as it glydes across it!!!What a severe difference it has and it shows!I admit,I need to use my Hoover steamclean soon but it realy picked up more dirt and left the floor cleaner than any of the previous models(including my Rainbow)I ever had.

That's a wonderful machine... and at that price, they may as well have paid YOU to take it. Those things can go for 200 to 300 dollars on Craig's List... I paid 200 for my G5 about three years ago.

Enjoy it... there's nothing like a power drive Kirby!

I have 2 Kirbys.....

and love them. I have a G5 and G6. My G5 works the best. I paid about $100 for the G6 and about $50 for the G5. My G5 works the best of the two.

I have a permanent hose attachment now hooked up to the G6 to do my cars with. You can't beat this vacuum for cleaning your car. Its better then anything else I've ever used.

Good luck with them. I really like the Kirbys, what quality.

4G 1969

My other Kirby is a model 4G.I was given that 15 years ago by my friend,Yvonne Higgins,in Balimore. Her mother past away and Yvonne and her sister took care of finding homes for her old belongings.as they saw this sitting all alone in a closet with the box of all the accesories,Yvonne said she and Helen, her sister looked at each other and in unisin, they both yelled out "Let's see if Chuck wants this! He'll love it!" So,that Christmas, unbenounced to me,there sat a huge, heavy box on my doorstep.I opened in and in pure amazement,There sat a gorgious Kirby upright model 4G(rebuilt) in mint condition with all the extras from Yvonne and family. I cried till my eyeballs were soggy. It,along with the rest of my uprights sits proudly between my living room and dining room in a cluster where they look beautiful and ready to use.I sold a Eureka Boss I got for $7 at GW a few months ago for $55 yesterday. Then today, afer church, found a Hoover upright with a boost of power in marone red for $9.It made a loud noise and as I removed the base cover, out popped a domino chip! I put the base back on and the noise was gone!It realy erks me that people just will not even try to fix anything! It works fine now and is among my cluster of uprights but nothing,so far, will even compare to the Kirby.

For a $9 investment and a little bit of TLC, you got a great deal. Beats me how anyone can plunk down big money on a new Kirby, only to abuse and then discard it without a second thought, but their loss is your gain. Now it's in the hands of someone who will appreciate it, you should be able to enjoy it for many more years to come.

I have an Ultimate G too, but sadly it's out of action at the moment. As far as I can tell the armature is shot, so a repair is on the to-do list. Have other vacs to tide me over in the meantime, but as you've already found out, once you've used a Kirby nothing else compares!

pixtures

I'd love to be able to take and send pix of this but am too computer illiterate to figure out how.The only camera I have purchased the past 30 years is the throw away type not at all digital.

Great Find

Here is my Goodwill G3 that I got for 5.99, I always look in the backroom, when I spotted it I told the manager I wanted it,when she plugged it in she said peeuu,it smells like dog so she marked it 5.99,I was going to wash the outer bag but after I took the full paper bag out the smell went away,it works flawlessly,I had a G4 and the tranny whined and you couldn't hardly push it if it was in neutral, and in drive it just skipped across the carpet and I paid good money for that one,Tech Drive Kirbys that work properly are great machines.
