This came up in my appliance search today, no use to me of course.

What surprises me is that its not one to build into the counter top, more of a drop in.

The seller also has a Jenn Aire unit for building in with extractor and inter-changeable burners - 2 x 2radient rings and a BBQ grill

This is strictly the Chambers design. KitchenAid purchased Chambers to get their built-in cooking appliances to have a full line of Kitchen appliances. The broiler is in the middle; one of the levers on the front raises the griddle for access to the broiler. The griddles gave very even heating because the electric element or the gas burner ran the full length of the cooking surface.
 
I still refer to these built-in "appliances" with electric or gas "burners" as cooktop.  "Ranges" are the freestanding or slidein devices that are both surface units and an oven all in one unit.  "Range top" to me is the cooking surface of a range.  
 
I saw these in a lot of 1980s kitchen design magazines (the Chambers version). What is strange to me is some of them had electric surface units but the broiler/griddle was gas if I recall right??

I posted another KitchenAid version from Craigslist awhile ago, that was just a drop in cooktop with the controls mounted horizontally like a typical cooktop. It had the Chambers daisy gas burners, but the center had an electric solid element burner that I think could be changed to a griddle.
 
KA CTs

In the mid and later 80s KA had gas CTs with and optional 5th burner that was a sealed element 120 volt electric unit, it could be changed out to a grill for grilling foods.

 

I installed one for a chef friend in 1986 who at first though the electric element was a waste of money till he found out that he uses it all the time.

 

I never saw a Chambers-KA CT that had electric elements and a gas grill in the same unit.

Chambers, Broiler-In-A-Top Cook-Top

Other than being an interesting bit of appliance history I could never see any great design or value in having this CT in my kitchen or any kitchen for that matter, there were so many better Gas or electric CTs then and now.

Looking closer, the RF burner is labeled "Power Burner." Does this just mean it's higher wattage? I know on some Chambers, that was the thermostatic burner.

Also the left center knob is labeled timer. Is this just a cooking timer or does it control anything?
