kitchen aid draining troubles

so pardon the ignorance here but this is my first ka. I notice that my machine starts to drain but then just randomly turns off then proceeds into the next sequence of the cycle. I notice lots of pausing, draining for a couple seconds then stopping. also the detergent dispenser stopped working.

pots and pans worked yesterday and today I tried normal. does this sound like a timer problem or is there some kind of sensor turning the pump off early?

I let it cool off after the cycle (it never successfully drained the tub in any wash or rinse but tried to) then pressed cancel and it drained all the water.

since the motor reverses for drain is it possible that the motor overhearts in drain?

I'm guessing a timer problem since the motor isn't being allowed long enough to pause to then execute the reversal to drain and vice-versa.

it definetely pauses, and drains for anywhere between 2 and 5 seconds. it just stops, then a few seconds later it fills then washes again. I'm guessing it's not supposed to partial drain ever!

I checked your profile but it did not say what model machine we are talking about. Can you tell us..Maybe we can troubleshoot it better?

Ka not draining and random draining>>> problems.....

We experienced the same scenario with our built in KA,Superba energy Saver V, 1984.....Was the fast rapid timer....Needs replaced....check and clean the mesh filter and that area for blockage....Purchase of new timer is available and easily replaced.....ours was only draining on Sani Cycle and of course drained on Cancel cycle....After any cycle chosen,except for Sani.... it would not drain on the third and final rinse....went right into the dry cycle with bottom of tub, full of clean rinse water....great for facial when you opened the door...LOL....

Does anyone know the sequence of just the normal cycle with the cycle times of each step? I'd like to time it and understand what it should be doing to compare it to what it is doing. I suspect the timer too, but I don't understand why its draining for such a short period of time.

LKDishwash, was yours draining slightly each time? Where did you get the new timer?

I don't think there's anything out there with a step-by-step breakdown for complete cycle times. Some owners manuals will describe the sequence of action but will only provide number of minutes for the entire cycle to complete.

Perhaps sales literature would have it. Otherwise service instructions might be another possible source, if you can get your hands on them.

Don't give up on your Monterey no matter how much flack you may be enduring over it. It's very fixable. Your wife's friends will be jealous of that machine, I guarantee her.

oh I'll fix it for sure

it's a good machine and I'm the one who does the dishes. i'll order the timer tomorrow. how do I takeout the old one to do a parts compare and should I replace the detergent dispenser while I'm in there?

The top panel comes apart fairly easily. The two ends unscrew as does the strip across the top. I think you'll have to remove upper screws from the door's tub liner for some of this stuff -- maybe the ends. The panel cover will have some screws holding it in place, which are probably below on either side of the handle opening.

Once those items are off, you'll be able to get at the timer. On my ISE Classic Supreme, the wires from timer to selector panel are all marked with matching ID's as those for the tabs they connect onto, which made for carefree disconnection and quick, easy reconnecting, but that's only going to help if you have the exact replacement timer. Otherwise, mark wires as needed in case there are discrepancies between the two.

If your detergent dispenser is operating properly I see no reason to replace it. The job can be done with the control panel in place, so it's not like you're missing out on an opportunity.
