Were KA portables like this one capable of being converted to a built-in?  Sears readily advertised the capability of their portables to be built-in later, but I don't recall KA making that claim.

A few member have done the conversion I'm not sure what the specifics are.

Converting a KitchenAid convertible, portable to built-in

Yes, this model is fully convertible. You just remove the sides, top wheels, etc. the only difference between this and the built-in version was the built-in version had a dual inlet valve to reduce the possibility of a flood. The portable versions had the standard single valve that everybody else used, guess the theory was if it started flooding, it was so easy to turn off the faucet and it saved a few dollars in the construction of the machine.

For somebody that wants a vintage KitchenAid dishwasher like this buying a portable convertible is a great way to get a really good machine as portables that are still around We’re almost never used and usually are in great shape mechanically, etc..

The KD-17 series were the portable models that changed from the cabinet panels to a wrap-around cabinet that remains in place when converted. You can tell by looking at the rear corners and see the wraparound construction.
