i have a kitchen aid from 2004. Sunday when i opened the door (which usually has a very tight feel to it) there was a loud pop and the door dropped wide open. Seems like a spring or something has broken. Do you take off the inner door panel to investigate or what is the fix?

Springs are easy but...
You will likely have to pull the machine out. If it is from 2004, then it is a Point Voyager, Tall Tub machine. Can you provide a model number please so we can be sure? The door had the stop where you leave it "option" and had some wheels and cords to make it work.
It is a relatively easy job to replace them but like I said, you will have to pull it out.
Then replace each side one at a time so you can use the other as a guide and you should be home free. If I remember correctly, the kit is for both sides, but we can check once we have a model number.

Broken Door Cable
Like Steve said you do have to pull it out, but only about 1/2 way if you are agile to get to the cables and rollers and springs. I have never seen a spring break on these DWs.

Price is good but you also need the cable rollers to do it right, you could take a chance installing just the cables and hope it lasts a while, the springs you will never need.
