Kitchen Re-Do

We spruced up our kitchen. Given the high cost of new cabinets and appliances, we decided to keep ours. Home Depot offers a cabinet refinishing system called Nhance, but they were expensive and so we decided to sand down the cabinets and re-finish them. We found door handles to match the existing ones, and decided to order them.

Here is a picture of the new handle. You usually see these on H&G in kitchens which are "dated". People usually throw them away.

New Vinyl Floor

We painted the ceiling, soffit and walls and had a new vinyl floor installed.

Yes, we kept the light fixtures. Pretty much this was a restoration of the kitchen as re-done in 1965. We also left the almond formica.

Carefull viewers

You may notice that the ovens were replaced. I was able to pick up a 1988 GE self-cleaning oven and replaced the older model. I really wanted all white appliances, but I hesitated on removing the original. We also opted for a more modern microwave, the newer ones seem to do popcorn much better with less burning. Although maybe I should have turned the level down on the Amana, and it would have been OK. We are very happy with our new kitchen, and enjoy the retro feel. Clearing out the cupboards and adding new contact paper on the shelves allowed us to trim down the amount of stuff. We ended up donating about 5 boxes of kitchen stuff to St. Vincent.

I like that vinyl floor tile, who is it made by?

Mannington

It's actually sheet vinyl. Mannington Maxima color M0003. I tried to find it on the internet but could not, and I believe it is an old color. I got it at Wood Brothers in Sacramento. It is 12' wide and was installed in one piece in the whole kitchen, including laundry area and pantry (across from the laundry). I had them do a flash cove, we used to call it a self-cove or integral cove base. It is very easy to clean. Although the floor is "tile like" in appearance the cove looks good with it. Some patterns with wide "grout" don't lend themselves to a cove base.

The old vinyl was installed in 6' wide goods with the seams under the washer, the refrigerator, infront of the sink, and near the end of the counter by the breakfast table. Needless to say, the seam under the washer opened up after a few accidents with drainage. Also the seam under the refrigerator with the constant heat from under the machine. I was determined to get a seamless floor in there.

I should have known...

We had a Mannington Silver floor put in our last house. It was a marble/gray tile pattern, similar to yours. Ours was high gloss. I couldn't believe the number of people who thought it was real stone! To us, it looked like vinyl.
Mannington makes a good product. The only thing we didn't like about it was when you mopped it, water would bead up on the surface like it was car waxed or something. We had it for 10 years before we moved and it still looked like the day it was installed.
And Mannington floors are not cheap either!

That old Coppertone oven!, I grew up with those early american handles, a word of advice,DONT wipe them with a damp rag or they will TURN GREEN!!!
