Kitchen Renovations - week 5

Or the "Not Much Progress" report! As with a lot of renovation projects, things slowed down this past weekend. Hubby is in Brazil (working, he claims...) and I am still waiting for delivery of the counter tops. The plumbing work is only going to be completed after the counter tops arrive and the second sink gets installed - at least it will all be done at the same time! But geez do I miss having running water and a dishwasher in the kitchen...
Spent a lot of time cleaning up construction debris (the local recycling pick up crew must dread the cardboard coming from my address!) and I hooked up the rest of the light fixtures.

Dining room fixture

Finally installed a vintage fixture for over the dining room table. I am having some second thoughts about it, though... Maybe a little too 'rustic'...

I need to put in dimmers still and a some undercabinet lighting, but the ambience is coming along!

Slight issues with the refrigerator light

I powered up the LW11 on Saturday morning to let it run and stabilize before putting all the food into it. I thought it ran quite a lot, but I didn't give it any more than that. I happened to get up at 2:30 Sunday morning and went down to the kitchen; I noticed a faint glow from around the fridge doors... Darn light was staying on! I found that the door switches had worn grooves into the door and weren't making complete contact with the switches (the vibrations from its journey from Texax to Ogden must not have helped). Anyway, a couple of strips of electrical tape on the door solved the problem for now. Not pretty, but unless you are on a stepladder, you'd never know.
I will take a better picture of the fridge with all the selves and food inside this weekend.

A discovery

I had completely forgotten about these two trays. They slide under the range burners instead of the traditional drip bowls. Neat idea! They are in pristine condition - check out the baking chart, too! You can bet that I am going to line them with foil before I start really using the range though!

Last but not least

I got the timer rewiring completed and reinstalled it, but I lacked the guts to try the combo without a final check of a real wiring diagram (which Gyrafoam is helping me out with!). Stay tuned!!!

I love the light fixtures - are the kitchen lights new? I searched high and low for a decent pendant fixture but found nothing that cool! I think the dining room light fixture is fine - it works with all the pine woodwork and as long as you steer clear of contemporary glass and metal table and chairs, it will all work. I always feel light fixtures (and men - hee hee!) are temporary - jewelry for a room and they can be changed anytime if you stumble upon something you like more.

What is the space to the left of the sink for?

I tend to agree about the light over the table not matching well with the others. It's a very colonial look, odds are from the 50's but the other lights in the kitchen are more reminiscent of the "space age" 50's.

Is the refrigerator holding a good temp? I hope it's running less with the lights out. I wonder about the cost of running the older units vs. newer. I think some designs form the past might have been more energy efficient than some of the newer ones.

Light fixtures are new

Believe it or not! I found them at Homo Depot and figured they were the best 'atomic' look I could hope for.
Gansky1 - that space to the left of the sink is reserved for the GE washer/dryer unit (I am keeping my fingers crossed about that wiring diagram) to complete the look.

MattL - the dining room fixture is a vintage piece but I think I really do need something more 'space age' as you pointed out. Hubby will be thrilled - he tried to pitch that fixture into the dumpster twice already... It just might work in the entry hall, though...
I hope the fridge is running fine now - I'll find out when I get back down there on the weekend... You know, I have been using vintage fridges for ages and I find that the operating cost has not been that great for the older manual or cycle defrost models. The older frostless models (well, the late 60's and 70's models) cost an arm and leg to run, though!
