KitchenAid Custom 21 Leaking

Hey guys, just discovered this site and its pretty cool. Ever since I was a kid I remember my parents having an old KitchenAid dishwasher in their house. Their current house came with a Custom 21 Model No: KUDC21OS3 as well. My mom loves this machine and doesn't ever want to get a new dishwasher because they just aren't as good as the older ones. I've been on the lookout for an old KitchenAid for my house as well. Anyway, my mom's machine is leaking from right under the motor. Her usual service man moved to another state and his apprentice came to look at her dishwasher. He took one look at it, said it needed a motor kit and gave a part number of 4163523. He said it wasn't availible and that she would have to get a new machine. I'm very mechanically inclined and believe I could fix it myself if I had the proper part, I just need your guys help. I took a look under the machine while it was running and indeed the water is leaking directly under the motor. Could someone let me know which part I would need? I am going to a local mom and pop appliance shop tomorrow to see if they have the correct part, but if they strike out, is there any other place I can get the correct part? I really appreciate any and all help.

But it's best to get a confirmation on this part from Steve or John in Beltsville.

 

Good Luck.  There is always the thought of keeping a eye on Craig's List for a Donor Machine.  Pick up the same or interchangeable model and keep it for parts.

Here is the part number for the

Shaft seal and impeller kit. 4171314 is the part number.

It comes with the instructions and shims and spacing tool.
If you are that mechanically inclined, you should be able to install it pretty easily.
I am assuming that the leaking water did not get into the motor since there is a flinger and water diverter between the motor and the pump under the machine.

Looks like Sears has it but you can also order it thru whirlpool which should take you right to Marcone's parts line.

Well I just wanted to report back on the problem. The kit seemed to work well at first. While I had the dishwasher out, I had to patch some rust holes on the back of the machine. Well about a month later, my mom called me and said there was a bunch of smoke coming out of the machine. I took a look and couldn't see anything charred at all. The motor will not run now though. I'm guessing the motor went out. Is there any way I could source a new motor? Are these motors very difficult to replace? Could it be as simple as a start capacitor? Also I have a lead on a never used, or so the seller said, kuds220t0. Its a couple hours away, but might be worth grabbing. Anything I should worry about running a 20+ year old for the first time? I would imagine that gaskets and rubber parts would deteriorate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

MY KUDI23

was built in 1994.  I bought it earlier this year in brand new never run since testing at the factory condition.  I installed it a couple months ago without any gasket issues at all.

go for the 22!

Bill, the 22 model is the following series after the 21 your Mom has. It has a few additional cycles but mechanically, it shares the same pump as the 21 and she will have no special learning curve. Both the 21 you have and the 22 are Hobart designs but built by Whirlpool. If her current racks are in good shape, use them in the 22 until they fall apart and then install the 22 racks so you get extra life from everything.

Besides the motor that is shot on the 21, once you start getting holes in the tank, it really is time to put it out of its misery and hers as well!

I would part out many of the components on the 21 as there will be some demand for them.
