Hello y’all, been away for several years. My two Kitchenaid Hobarts have been running flawlessly. My KDI-21a recently started running for 15 seconds then stops. A couple minutes later it starts on its own again and keeps repeating this process. Motor/pump never runs longer than 15sec at a time. I pulled the pump down and found a small piece of metal in the pump and removed it. I was sure this was the problem. Reassembled and ran it again, but still does the start and stop. Could this metal piece have burned up my motor? Is there a build in overload that shuts the motor down if it gets hot? Any advice would be helpful. I have worked on these many times and this one’s got me stumped.

I pulled the timer and watched it advance. Does anyone know which wires output from the timer to run the pump? Can someone tell me what to read with a voltmeter at the time to see if the timer is dropping the motor out. Also, does the motor have an overload shutoff if it heats up?

Motor problem on a Kd21 dishwasher

The motor start relay may be sticking that’s the first thing to check.

Other than that the motor has a shorted winding and will need to be replaced.

There is an overload protector built into the motor that’s probably what is cycling it off after 15 seconds, this problem has nothing to do with the timer etc.

Remove the lower panel check carefully for any signs of past water leaking into the motor or on the relay, if water has been getting on either one of these parts that could’ve been the cause of the problem.

yes

Take it loose and shake it, if you take blue & red wires off there should be no continuity between those two terminals unless you turn it up-side-down.

If there is continuity the relay is bad, if the relay checks out you very likely need a new main motor.

Combo52 , thanks for the wise advice. I checked the relay and it was fine. So I purchased a used motor off of eBay and voila! All is good. Think I’ll see if I can get the old motor rewound as a spare since we have two Imperial 21’s in use.
