kitchenaid kd-16 and kd-17

i have a bunch of kitchenaids and enjoy fixing them up and collecting them and this site is awesome! thought i was the only one out here who loves old washers, dishwashers etc.

but i am weak in my kitchenaid history so anything anyone can help me with would be greatly appreciated. like when did the 16 model start and end. i know the 15's started in 64, in fact i just bought a kdc-15 last week, looks great. also what is the main diff between a kd-16 and kd-17? i'm going to post a lot of ads on craigs list to try and find a kds-16 or kds-17 somewhere in the ohio, indiana, michigan area. which would be a better find? had a kds-17 twice in my life, it was the true kitchenaid that i remember, best dishwasher ever made in my book. but i know very little about the 16 series. can anyone fill me in please!?

I would love to see pictures of your KitchenAid dishwashers...especially the KDC-15. Where did you find that model??? That is a rare model you don't see too often. (Or at least that has been my experience).

The 15 series was made between 1964-1968.
16 series...1968-1971
17 series...1971-1974
17A series (with energy saver no heat dry option...1974-1976

The main differences between the KDS-16 and the KDS-17 would be the detergent cup design, the upper rack Flex-O-Divider setup, and some cycle differences (Heavy Soil) on the 16 vs the Soak Cycle on the 17. At some point on the 16 they did add the Soak Cycle feature on it though. I currently own a KDS-36 which is the Superba 16 model in a dishwasher-sink combo. Mine only has the Heavy Soil option and I find it rather worthless. The only difference between the Full Cycle and the Heavy Soil cycle on mine is the addition of a 2 minute Pre-Wash which in my opinion does nothing but flush the detergent down the drain...it adds nothing to increase the cycle time to make any difference in cleaning power. Even the main wash times and rinse times are the same. Same heated dry on both also. I don't know what they were thinking on that one. That is the only thing I don't like on my Superba 16.

I Love all KitchenAids but I have to say that my favorite is the KDS-18. With the 3 level wash, I think that was there best model ever. That Overhead Constant Rinse made all the difference. Enjoy the Club. Attached is a pic of my KD2-P

I have four in my collection.
A KDS-15 in Stainless (Used to be my "daily driver")
A KDS-56
A KDC-17 in Harvest Gold
And my current "daily driver", a KDP-20

I do have quite a few of the technical manuals in my library, so if you need some information perhaps I can help you out a bit.

Todd (Varicyclechoice), I agree with you on your assessment of the Heavy Soil vs. Full Cycle cycles on the KDS16. Lady across the street got a new KDS16 fiarly early on in its run and I used the Heavy Soil cycle ONCE--didn't see any cleaning improvement over the Full cycle so that was that. I can't remember the finness of the two, but Ithink Sani Cycle was the same as the Heavy Soil, except for the 180 degree final, 3rd rinse.
