Energy save IV/Imperial. Came with the house and I have been proudly running it the last 9 years. Seems to be a good machine. I have been deep into it and made several repairs. the other day it started smoking from under the machine. Believe it was electrical, shut it down, waited till the smoke cleared and inspected. Found nothing, ran 3 cycles since with no problems. I mainly want to know if anyone has a shop manual, or knows the timer cycles? It was within the first 10 minutes of the cycle and I am trying to figure out what was running. The diswasher was silent when this happened, I figure maybe the preheat cycle however the element seems to be working fine. Thoughts?

Hi, the most common reason this machine will smoke is the water heater was engaged without being covered with water. Are you sure the smoke didn’t originate from within the dishwasher tank?

If something electrical burned underneath, you should be able to smell it somewhere or it wasn’t very serious. I would keep an eye on the machine and keep using it.

If you take the outer door panel off there’s a cycle chart for the timer and wiring diagram on the inside of the upper door.

I have an electrical background so I'm pretty comfortable with it and there's definitely nothing burnt underneath. I'm also confident it did not come from inside the tank. My main concern right now is something up with the motor but like I said it's been fine for several cycles.

Hi, the main motor certainly could’ve put out some smoke sometimes a small part of the winding shorts in a motor like this and then it goes on working for a long time, certainly not a good sign, but I wouldn’t worry about it too much if it fails it fails and you’ll just have to find another motor or another dishwasher.

Troubleshoot all the connections regarding the heating element first, before anything else.
Switch contacts, wiring, etc.
I jumped the gun and deleted that post, running a cycle now and I have 120v to the heater and can hear it boiling the water. Does it also heat the water for the rinse cycle?

I'm not sure if mine does.
I know it does the "preheat" for the initial prewash, and for the last sani rinse. (light comes on)
I believe it uses a lower heat for the main wash and rinses, and depends on the residual internal cabinet heat as well, which is part of the drying cycle when that blower kicks in.
Of course, it should be hooked to the hot water supply as well.
My water heater is set around 120-130 degrees.

KDC 19 KitchenAid dishwasher cycle operation

This dishwasher preheat the initial fill to about 140° in the sump not with the pump running it uses a 1400 W heating element to do this.

All KD 19 machines also preheat the final rinse to 150° except for the S model that would preheat the water to 165 I believe for a Sani rinse if selected.

KitchenAid eliminated the electric dry heater on the 19 series. This proved to be a very unpopular change with consumers and they promptly went back to a drying heater for the 20 models and every dishwasher built thereafter in the US.

KD 19 dishwashers like all US dishwashers built around this time and beyond operate fine on 120° water as the dishwasher will boost the water as necessary if the correct cyclist chosen, etc.
