KitchenAid KUDM220t1 Loud Rumbling noise

Does the symptom indicate that it is likely the motor has gone bad? If so, is there any source of supply for the motor or motor repair?

My KitchenAid dishwasher (KitchenAid Kudm220t1) has a constant and loud rumbling noise during all motor operating cycles; wash, rinse, and drain. This began a week ago. It may sound similar to a layer of small gravel in a metal can as the can turns.

I’ve taken the interior down to the metal drain impeller. This drain impeller is still installed. Although I tried to see if the drain impeller could easily be removed like the wash impeller; it could not be easily removed.

The metal drain impeller spins freely when turned by hand; no noise. Same with the wash impeller.

I was hoping to see debris in any of the breakdown but everything is clear and clean.

Could there be something under the drain impeller causing the noise?

If the drain impeller is removed does the shaft to motor seal stay in place? I want to avoid creating a dishwasher leak.

There are no leaks showing under the dishwasher or on the motor that are visible.

Rarely will anything get under the drain impellers on these machines. And yes, they can be a bear to remove. If you are careful and patient, applying the correct upward pressure will have the impeller move up and out for you. The rotating part of the shaft seal is on the underside of this part and the stationary part remains in place in the lower pump housing.
Is the wash impeller intact with no broken vanes on it? Does the wash arm support look to be in good condition or has it degraded and is the washarm riding on the plastic and not on the brass ring that is part of the support? Just a few more things for you to check!

Would that be the handsome Monterey model?  If so, it's definitely worth going to the trouble to fix it.

Another thought!

The rumbling sound you may be hearing could be the cooling fan that is on the top of the motor shaft just below the plastic pump housing. The plastic fan would often split at the shaft and would make some strange sounds on motor start up or while it is running. You can see it when it is not running from under the machine. If you turn off the power first, you can usually reach in with your finger and try to turn the motor with the fan and you will know immediately if it is cracked or broken. If it is broken, then you need to find a new motor or maybe one of us who may have stripped off a fan from a bad motor. If it is not the fan, then more investigation will have to be done.

We would need to hear it to be sure but you very likely have a motor with bad bearings. These motors are still around we have lots of good used ones if you can't find one locally.

Thanks for the suggestions. Not sure if I will be able to post sound.

The wash impeller seems to be in perfect condition; no cracks or missing pieces.

I’ve removed the wash arm; the wash arm support seems to be in good condition and the brass wash arm bushing appears intact and where I think it is suppose to rest.

With power off the plastic motor fan shroud turns smoothly. When motor is running the fan shroud appears to turn at expected RPM and no wobble.

Is there any sort of ball bearing sleeve that goes into the bottom of the drain impeller?

Everything I disassembled inside the tub, was clean down to and including the top of the drain impeller.

If it is a motor bearing are they replaceable by a specialty shop?
