Hello All! I'm looking to purchase a well cared for,Kitchenaid Superba dishwasher, preferably made by Hobart during the early to mid-1980s. I'd very much appreciate anyone's expert counsel on where I can find one. Thank you!

They still pop up quite often on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace. Keep an eye out and you’ll find one.

Agree with what everyone is saying. I'm finding a lot of sellers are posting on Facebook Marketplace now vs Craigslist, but I would regularly check both. I picked up this brand new KDS-20 almost two years ago now. It was on FB marketplace in Pittsburgh. I'm in eastern PA but drove the 4 hours to pick it up. It's amazing what you can find with a bit of patience. Good luck hunting, it's part of the fun!

Wow! That's a beautiful machine! How are there new units out there? If I date that model correctly, possibly 1983? This would be exactly what I'd love to find. Thank you you for sharing and your counsel!

Thanks! It's pretty amazing, I look at it and smile all the time. You'd think it would be impossible to find these, a lot of the time it's a matter of the right time and relatively the right place. I've seen these types of stories peppered through the forum.
The story behind this one.. I found it on FB Marketplace.. The seller remodels kitchens and was tearing out a new kitchen for a couple who built their house in the early 80's. They installed the DW by default but didn't believe in using them.. so there it sat for about 36 years - installed but unused. I can't believe that through those years nobody locked the door and pushed one of the cycle buttons.. but nope, all of the packing material was in the machine, including instruction manual, a feature sticker on the inside of the door, energy label, etc. I was so happy to find it - I have to imagine that some of these wind up in a landfill. He sold it to me for $100! Oh, and funny story about that kitchen remodel - he told me that he couple - you guessed it - was going to install a new DW.
There are a few other similar stories on the forum.. some even crazier, for example, I know people have found machines being sold that are in their original cartons, never opened. Pure insanity!
I would have been happy finding a good condition used unit - I know they are out there as well.. Someone who maybe used a machine infrequently.
I'll keep a lookout for you.. I still look at FB Marketplace and Craigslist for fun.

I found a KDS-19 built in 1980 a couple of years ago in the original box for $50 about an hour from me. I’d heard a few stories of people doing this but it had never happened to me. I can’t say that anymore. The story on this one was the guy’s mom was remodeling her house but for some reason the dishwasher was never installed. The box was pretty rough but everything thing was there and machine shined like new.

I found a very clean hybrid KUDS23 on Marketplace and picked it up. I know it's not a Hobart, but it does very much resemble the Hobart look. The upper rack has some rust spots and I'd really like to find a replacement. No one seems to have them. Any suggestions on where to find one? I'd rather replace for some longevity. Also, any suggestions for safe/effective scale removal? No iron stains, but definitely white-looking mineral deposits on the tub walls, wash arms, dryer inlet cover, rack glides.
Note: I am still looking for that KD19 or 20 Superba...the dream machine! Please keep an eye out!

The 23 series retained a lot of Hobart influence but got an upgrade with Whirlpool's power module, so it's considered better than the 21 or 22 series for that reason. It should be a fine placeholder until you find a true Hobart, but I would steer clear of the 21 or 22 since they (and the 23) offer only a single final rinse.
Your ideal Superba would be an 18 - 20 series, but be advised hat the 19 series has no heated drying option if that makes any difference to you.

Try running the machine through its longest wash cycle with some Lemishine powder and see if that helps.
I was able to find a small jar of Maytag (no relation) blue plastisol touch-up for an issue with rust on racks, but that was several years ago and I located it at an appliance parts store with a lot of old stock. The container looks similar to "White Out" and includes an applicator brush. It may take some searching on line to find it.
Otherwise, racks from older models (back to series 20, if not futher) will work if you can find a donor machine. I'll leave the specifics about model range to the experts.

Well, I did it! Had to pick up a donor machine as the door panel was rusted through...I originally thought it was just chipped enamel. I did swap out a few other parts as well (pump/motor, rinse aid dispenser, rack parts) because the donor machine was lightly used. Unfortunately it wasn't a Superba, so I couldn't use the tank, too. I like to call this machine, My little Frankenstein!" It may need a new heating element because it takes about 15 minutes to bring the water up to operating temperature. I'm very proud of this work and result. It's a great primer for the KD20 Superba refurb when I find one.thanks for reading...let me know what you think.
