Has the other Kroger stores done this

The slow demise of powder detergent...

Sadly, this is a trend that is going on nationwide in most grocery/retail chains here in the US.

As everyone already knows, as of next year, Wal*Mart will no longer be selling powder detergent period.
When I was in NY a few months back, I noticed powder detergent is becoming all but obsolete up there.

Thankfully, there must be a demand here in Florida for powder detergent because the supermarket chains here still stock a variety of powder brands such as Tide, Cheer, Gain, Fab, Arm & Hammer, Ajax, Purex, Fresh Start, All,..to name a few.

Shane, the Meijers stores did the same thing with the x2 up here! I went to purchase some Purex the other day and had to bring home the x2.That is all they stock of ANY brand now! Tried it a couple times and it seems ok, but not as much suds. Made me think the x2 was bullsh-t, but tried it on some dirty rags and the Purex x2 cleaned them well. So maybe the x2 is ok after all. I'm just leary about paying more for less with anything these days. It is becoming a trend you know...

BTW: Meijers still have a good selection of powders though. Wonder when those will be gone?

I don't know about Kroger, but I was in our local Shop and Shop today and 15-load boxes of plain Tide and Ivory Snow were on sale for $5.89. They are ALL expensive these days, but I think what did powders in was that liquids became cheaper and more heavily promoted. Consumers take those "number of loads" figures on the box and bottles as gospel, and the price advantage for powders just dried up....

Stop and Shop carries small boxes of Cheer and Arm and Hammer as well. Shoprite still carries Tide, Arm and Hammer, and Trend. In a separate "Green" area, they carry a powder called "Bio-Kleen".

Pathmark only carries Tide and Arm and Hammer.

The only place you can get All powder is in Walgreens, and they only carry the "Free and Clear" powder now.

The only place Surf powder is still available is at Target and Walmart.

Same here in Memphis. Kroger has only about 1/4 of the entire detergent selection dedicated to powders (mostly Tide, Arm & Hammer, Gain, Cheer & all Free & Clear). The other grocery store, Schnucks, has even less space for powders. I emailed Schnucks about their less-than-exciting selection of powdered detergents and their reply was a link to another company's website where I could order online. LOL - there ya go... send your customer away!

I do not like liquid detergent at all. I am way too aware of the stinch that is caused because of sludge build-up from using liquids.

Bi-O-Kleen

Scott, if you can find Bi-O-Kleen's "Premium Plus" powder, it's good stuff. It contains enzymes and oxygen bleach and is extremely low sudsing. I use it in a front loader and it works great on the profile wash (starts warm then heats up to hot). There are also regular (less enzymes?) and fragrance free versions, although I've not used them and can't comment on their efficacy.

Can still find a fairly decent selection of powders at stores around here, although Tide dominates the shelves. Does anyone still use Bold powder (US version)? I like the scent, but don't recall it being a particularly aggressive cleaner.

Bold Plus Powder..

Hi David.

Venus sent me a box of that last year and it still has the same clean scent I remember growing up. I would say the it is average at best for stain removal.
I was in Lowe's recently and was surprised to see that they are selling Bold Plus Powder. Maybe it is making a comeback??

I still see Bold Plus in the bigger grocery stores so I figure someone must be buying it. Was in Fred Meyer (Kroger) today and they had at least 10 or 12 boxes on the shelf. Never have noticed it go on sale, though.

So Shane, I know you've got a front loader. Do you regularly use non-HE detergents? Just curious which of the non-HE formulas works best when the dosage is reduced for use in a front loader.
