The agitator shaft is toast. Trying to clean it up would just remove more of what is already gone. Best bet would probably be to find a good used replacement gearcase but they are getting more extinct by the day. Trying to find someone to do the job is also difficult because even the ones that knew how to do the job usually don’t want to anymore. To do the job correctly for the long run will more than likely also require the replacement of the basket drive and center post bearings and seals. The good news is, with a mechanical inclination and a want to keep the old gal going, the information is here to do the job via literature and the brains of many here who love old appliances.
