Lady Kenmore Agitator Needed

Thank you Pierre and Combo52. I will look for the other model agitator as well.
Mom's did come out and my sister sent me a pic of the ring that attaches inside the agitator that holds the dog ears and which fell out when the agitator was taken out (see pix attached). She believes the part that the ring is attached to inside the agitator is also broken, so a new ring and ears may not work either. I am not sure of her diagnosis.

maybe you should look for a replacement washer on your mom local craigslist area for a whirlpool like the one I showed you or if you find time to visit your mom take her shopping to a used appliance store here is a link on your mom craiglist area washer is a whirlpool but dryer is a Kenmore

Sorry, but somehow my reply posted twice. FireFox issue.

I also found out the washer is not a 1974 but a 1986 model.
if that bearing is not what holds the dog-ears or the washer didn't even use the dog-ears, then I'm not sure why it is not turning with the shaft. So I have to assume that the drive spleen is stripped. But I am not sure what that is.

bendixmark....if you have the agitator, please let me know how I can get a hold of you to discuss further.

Drive spline, not spleen ... the splined/grooved end of the agitator drive shaft that comes up into the tub from the transmission.  The top of the agitator is splined/grooved inside to match the shaft.  Bad/worn/rusted-out splines on the drive shaft requires replacement of the drive shaft, which is a remove-and-open-the-transmission kind of job.

The agitator bearing in your picture is a guide ring that helps center the agitator against the neck of the basket and isn't crucial to operation, as Combo52 advised.  It has nothing to do with dogs ... there are no dogs on this style of agitator.

Picture 1 is a splined drive shaft.

Picture 2 is an example of a bearing inside a Whirlpool agitator version (turned mostly upside down in Pic 3) that would work on your machine.

Your mom’s washer is a 1974 or 1975 model. This model came out in 1974 and was also sold for 1975. In 1976 a different control style was introduced and no more push button Lady Kenmores were made. The serial number on her dryer is 1974. The serial tag for the washer is behind the machine on the left side towards the top. Knowing the serial would tell whether it’s ‘74 or ‘75. I have the exact same set in harvest gold and mine were both manufactured in 1975.

Lady Kenmore Agitator & Shaft Issue

Hey everybody;

Thought I would post an update on Mom's Lady Kenmore. I had a friend go over and he was able to remove the agitator. It is done for sure, but a new one may not help due to the rusted shaft. See picture attached. Although a fuzzy pic, I can see it also needs to be replaced. I have not looked up that part number, but I doubt it is still available. I told Mom that if that shaft comes out, other attached parts may also fall apart. Then she is really done for. Any feedback would be appreciated.

The agitator shaft does not come out from the top.  It's an integral part of the transmission, which is removed from the bottom of the machine.  Changing the shaft requires opening the transmission.

The agitator shaft is toast. Trying to clean it up would just remove more of what is already gone. Best bet would probably be to find a good used replacement gearcase but they are getting more extinct by the day. Trying to find someone to do the job is also difficult because even the ones that knew how to do the job usually don’t want to anymore. To do the job correctly for the long run will more than likely also require the replacement of the basket drive and center post bearings and seals. The good news is, with a mechanical inclination and a want to keep the old gal going, the information is here to do the job via literature and the brains of many here who love old appliances.

Well....I knew the consensus was was not going to be good. Y'all are correct, it would be hard to find someone to try and tackle this job. There's the hard part of finding the parts and then the knowledgeable tech. Best I can offer Mom is a broom stick to agitate the clothes with since right now they are just getting wet and spun.

Well hopefully you won’t have to give up on the washer. I know it’s sounds pretty bad but hopefully you can come up with a solution. Especially since you have the set if I remember correctly from previous posts.

That is a nice old lady kenmore. If for whatever reason you decide to get rid of it let folks here have a chance at it before it goes to the dump. I would like to fix it for you but you would have to figure out how to get it here. It could still be a great machine again but you would probably be looking at a big expense between parts, labor, and getting the machine here.

there could be a whole replacement or donor machine to swap the insides with.....

I did reach out to Gordon since he has the agitator that I thought was the only thing I needed. But looks like he has been out of pocket. The shaft and whatever parts it connects to is what I need as well, I assume. I'm in the Dallas area and Mom is in El Paso, TX, so that adds to my dilemma.

To continue this saga....Since the shaft is rusted as per the pix and it would be difficult to find a new shaft/transmission for it,since I understand the shaft can't come off the transmission, I had the crazy idea of chopping off the rotted end and welding on a similar piece that will match another more current agitator. Anyone with feedback on whether this is doable or not is welcomed. Trick would be to do it while the shaft is still on the machine. I believe by disturbing the current shaft & transmission, other parts will break, such as seals and stuff. Would work in my mind, anyways.

I don’t see how it would work. If it did the agitator shaft seal that’s already in bad shape would be burnt to a crisp.

I would drill a hole through the agitator and shaft, insert an expanding and/or cotter pin, and screw the cap back on....

I did this on a filterflo once, the only one who knew was me...worked like a charm

Agitator shaft

You can remove it without too much trouble. Remove the transmission and pull the cover , easier said than done. The proper way to refurbish a shaft is to sandblast or have it chemically stripped. Weld filler material in the low/grooved spots. Machine it flat again. Take it to chrome shop. Done.

Rusted Agitator Shaft On A BD WP Washer

The quick way to fix this washer for a while is to do what Martin suggested, get another agitator that at least fits some what on the old rusted shaft, then with the agitator in place drill a 1/4" hole through the agitator and shaft and put a strong bolt through it, then drill a 2nd hole 3/4" above the other 180 degrees from the other and put a 2nd bolt through.

 

I have seen this done and if you do a good job it might last a good while.

 

Other than this you have to pull the transmission as Eugene suggested and replace the shaft, there is no need to try to rebuild the old shaft however, new shafts are all over Ebay for as little as $20

Thanks again all for the suggestions. If I lived where this ol'Lady is, I would tackle it for sure. I can't seem to find a reliable repair guy in town to tackle it.
