So awhile back, trying to get the agitator out of my '71 Lady K, I broke the agitator nut. It is now broken off inside the agitator shaft. I beleive my best bet would be to replace the agitator shaft? Gordon, et al., what are your thoughts on this? Now how do I got about replacing the agitator shaft? I have taken the inner tub out. Am I going to have to take the transmission out of the cabinet?

Jed - it would require a complete transmission teardown to replace the agitator shaft. I've had luck in the past by drilling and using an easy out to remove the broken off agitator bolt.
I'll be posting a thread shortly documenting a complete rebuild of a '59 Kenmore, which should help give some prespective on the tasks required to change out the agitator shaft, if so desired.

You do not have to replace the shaft or remove the transmission. Drill out the remainder of the bolt and tap the hole. You can get a tap kit at the hardware store.
I so agree. You don't want to go through all the work that will be required to replace just the shaft.
soak the screw with liquid wrench, drill several small holes in the screw carefully, avoiding drilling into the shaft itself, and with a needlenose you should, eventually be able to manually unscrew the screw base.
Sounds tedious, but, much easier than taking machine completely apart.
