Earlier today, Launderess inspired me to test the capacity of the WP Convertible Washer. I was surprised at how much it will hold if you want it to. While in the midst of this, my niece Meegan dropped by, home from grad school, with her Blackberry. She said B's don't do faces well compared to a camera, but that they take decent pix. My mug-shot's comin' later.

 

So first off, is the grungey southwest corner of my deck where the old WP lives, having given 4 years of non-stop service in the kitchen. Two summers ago, Steve Gyrafoam, Rickr, and other guys were all making jokes about purple machines. Steve was about to paint a Unimatic purple, and Rick either has or photo-shopped a purple washer. I forget. We had talked about this at length.

 

So one day, on a whim while out biking, I stopped by a car parts store and bought a can of purple paint to jazz up the WP C, the results of which were less than satisfactory, but it was fun and this machine's facade is now a real crowd pleaser, especially the beautiful bronzed bottom.

So then I remembered that John had so generously given me a

And I had been wanting to post pix of it for the longest time and to publicly thank him. The valve, a spring loaded ball and cock, it's called, fits into the hose easily, no tools required. Sometimes the ball doesn't adhere perfectly and there is some dripping; other times it seals without a drop--must be a tiny nub on the ball some where. The washer is spinning and the suds are being retained in the outer tub. Sorry, the load had already been removed. (The white markings on the chrome is just splashed water.)

The suds--in this case, rinse water--is returning.

The Energy Ring of the pulsator is one that I bought from Joe/Joel. It is smaller than the original one and prevents tangling no matter how you load; it was designed for Jetcone Agitators. I LOVE it.[this post was last edited: 12/22/2011-22:16]

When Meegan arrived, I had just washed a full load of dark h

So still having the WP's capacity in mind, I decided to see how much of the full Frigidaire load I could fit into the WP; it's a big load: sweater, sweats, trunks, shorts, heavy cotton longsleeve shirts. I was careful not to put the rocks in. I have a bunch of rock gardens from pretty finds on the beach, and that's a recent stash of small ones. Coming up the stairs from the beach, I set them on the table till they find their way to a garden. The small gray discs and cones are actually ancient fossils.

but it was crowded, and I would not normally overload like that although many non-washer people do indeed pack machines that full. About 2/3's of the Frigidaire load would have fit comfortably.

I wondered how the frigidaire sudssaver worked,  it simply blocks the drain hose, then one can return the sudsy water to the machine?  How does it drain the rinse water?  MickeyD,  Happy Holidays to you, i love the purple Whirlpool. arthur

You can save either wash or rinse water. If you save wash water, you remove the load after the wash spin, return the suds, add the second load, and rinse the first load later or else where. When I said the purple and bronze was a crowd pleaser, I was kidding, but I secretly like it very much. It just so nasty and "out there." Glad you like it too. And Happy Holidays to you too, Art.

OOH!  What model is that Frigidaire??  The control panel and dials look similar to my 63 Canadian Multi-Matic.

 

Love the lakefront setting - it must be magical to have laundry gently flapping in the breeze at sunset there!

John insists that "full" loading and less frequent use is the key to washer longevity.

 

Thanks, Bill ;-D Had too much stuff on--almost 50 degrees, winter won't come. Once in a while, the lake and the sky are the same color and you can't tell where one begins and the other ends. Bleak but beautiful.

 

You've got the same breed, Ben, only more purebred.

I just love the pictures and just seeing you do the washing on your deck so close to the lake and beach that sure beats the heck out of our laundry room.  Do you do any laundry out there in the coldest times?  If so do you have problems with parts freezing?

Don't think I've ever washed out there this late. Once it gets cold, no, but all summer long, yes. It's fun to pop the load out of the machine and go right to the clothes line. It makes you fell really good, and lucky, and grateful. Merry Christmas to you.

Hi Darren, yes, it's the same one, but in the vid, I only show the nice top and innards, the cabinet was never too pretty, till I painted it purple and bronze, ha ha.

My LG and Miele face the Pacific and light up during sunrise here.Today is the first day since 11/11 we've had a clear sunrise. I've been hospitalised since and thought the weather would never clear up.All the falls are full blown and friends are bringing me photos to see some of my favorite falls here.When it rains this long,it cleans out all the horrible polution from our rivers and creeks.It is strongly advised not to swim in the ocean now due to the debres that has accumulated washing down to the ocean from all the mountain pig farms we have.A lot of people,mostly tourists, get deathly ill from going in the ocean after a big storm.The best way to tell is to just look and see all the mud that has accumulated visible from the beaches.If the ocean waves are muddy,you'll notice nobody surfing and mostly fishing boats instead of sailboats or pleasure boats.I had a 1960 frigidaire Custom imperial model and a 1962 Custom Deluxe.I liked them both but prefered a Rapidry spin instead of the slower spin that these models had. I had found a WXP model that needed a new clutch but it still worked fine on occasion and was fun to "tune in" the agitation and spin speeds with its "infinate speed" controls.

For Me? Oh You Darlin!

Quite some test you did there, don't know if one can compete! *LOL*

Did several *small* loads in the Whirlpool Friday (by small one means loads consisting of one or a few odd items not enough to make a full or even half load in the Miele), did so some sheets.

Frist was a set of full/queen polyester satin sheets and pillow slips (2). While turn over was good find one must *learn* how to load a top loader properly. Find get best results with sheets if they are dropped (a la Frigidaire Jet Action washers) rather than arranged around the agitator. This seems to stop air bubbles from forming.

The rest of the loads were clothing which came out fine. Oh did one final white queen percale sheet and it came out well.

Don't own any king sized sheets so that's me for you!

We had brilliant sunshine all day, and although the air was a brisk 32, I still got in a sweet bike ride. Hope you can ride again soon.

About the WXP. When I read your fascinating post, I could hear the WXP tuning up and down. Now, I've never seen one, so either there is a vid somewhere, or I dreamed it. Some day, we'll have one in the club humming up and down the warp selector to our grand delight.

 

Laundress, My sheets are all queens, too. Johnny boy has the kings. LOL

Glad you experimented because I knew the WP was more agile than the loading book pretends, which is ironic because usually the loading books claim room for far more laundry than a normal person would put in, except John.

Happy to have rescued your water bill.

This is one of the machines that John was working on in the warehouse when I was up last year, I thought it was comical and grabbed a pic. The machine was one of those fancy all-electronic GE Wizards I believe.
