Norge Washers
If you people had ever used a Norge washer would not go back to using anything else. Norge was one of the strongest built
washers on the market. My Aunt Hazel in Pa. had a SQ. but when her mom went to live in the manor in town my Aunt got her mom's Norge because it washed better and got clothes cleaner than the SQ. I'm also a Norge fan from working at
Montgomery Wards. I had a Norge built Wards washer and it was
great. I wish I still had it. People we know when we would have yard sales always asked us how we got our clothes so clean? I would tell them it was because of our Norge built washer.

Norge washer and dryer
I almost forgot to tell you guys is when I was very young and
was watching mom's 50's sires Kenmore believe this or not but she had a Norge timeline gas dryer. We swaped it for a big GE
stove from my greataunt meriam. They never did use it though.
something about the gas connections. Oh well. Just thought you might like to know. I also owned a Norge built Wards electric dryer. It was the best dryer that my wife and I have every owned, with the 8cubic foot drum and the 18inch steel fan in the back that blew the air through the drum. This dryer would dry clothes in 30 min. or less no kidding.
But one day the motor burned out in it, so I replased it and put a new one in it. Then I got really stupid and had a dumb
ass attack and soled it to some friends who needed one because we had bought a new Magic Chef dryer one that was built after Maytag had bought Norge. It was never the dryer that our Norge was. Just thought you would like to know this stuff hope I'm not boring you people with this stuff?

Looking back,...i think the Norge washer in our family was by far the best washer we owned. Wish i knew then what i know now..LOL. Anyway, welcome to this club once again and pull up that computer chair and enjoy all the great stuff there is to see in this little corner of cyberspace.

Thrift Store Norge
Came across this washer at Salvation Army in Mesa for $130. I "borrowed" the owner's manual inside for this scan. Outward appearance is very nice. What year approximately?

I have a question about the Norge/Magic Chef washer line I hope someone can answer. I had a Norge pair, (with the lint generating, positive air flow dryer) back in the 80's. Of course I took a look at the washer's innards, and the thing looked like it was built like a tank. It also had a 3/4 horse motor, and a solenoid operated tub brake that was guaranteed to frighten small animals and children. Can anyone tell me how the Norge reliability compared to other machines? I only owned them a year, and sold them with the house when I moved.

Norge equipment was fair in the 80's it's long gevity had been
compromised though the Wards washer that we had only lasted 9
years. Don't know why this was but probably had cheapen them
out some.

I dont know who it was that said it but the washers that Frigidaire and White-westinghouse are building right now are
some of the best washers on the market. My folks live in the Dallas area and 2 years ago their Kenmore died on them and they bought a Frigidaire with the 3/4 hp motor and has the steel gears in the trans. My dad says it washes better than the Kenmore. This is due to the fact that Electrolux made them put steel gears back in the transmissions which was a big plus in my book. This will alone improve the longgeviety
of the washer and will hold up better. Oh, the indexing tubs in Frigidiare and White-Westinghouse provides more agitation
action the only thing I wish is that they would go back to a straight vane agitator as I think that they wash better than
the sprial type. In fact I'm sure of this because a friend of mine has had two Kenmores and a Whirlpool and has hated them all as they didn't clean as well as they should of. She had a Frigidaire that she had bought at an auction and it washed better than any of the others.

I'm going to say the late 60's and maybe 70 or 71 but realy close to it as it was in the early 70's that Norge started puting 3/4 hp motors in their washers and boosted it up to 20lbers. How I know this is when I was growing up at home my folks used to get the speigals catalog and they had Norges in it and remember reading about them, with the features that they had. But like I said it might be really close. Thanks gansky1.

maytaguy if you only knew about maytag that I know and that is at this time during the 70's, Maytag was only putting a 1/3
hp motor in their washers and they washed clean for about 5 years and after that they would bog down under heavy loads and didn't get clothes as clean, but they lasted long.

Maytag always used 1/3 HP motors in their Helical Drive machines, if it "bogs down" there's another problem, motor glides, belts, etc.
The way the 70s Maytag is designed it would be impossible for the motor to bog down. If the machine is OVERloaded, the belt would slip to protect the motor (best and most simple clutch system of any household washer).
What makes you think that an electric motor gets weaker with age? This is a popular misconception.
Did any home washer really have a 3/4 HP motor? That's huge, not to mention it would weigh about 30 pounds and draw about 15 amps!
