Well this is the way that I heard it

The "Dual action agitator" from Sears had the pattend run out on it, once that happened, everyone jumped on board.G.E. changed their design and dumped the filter flo and went down the drain from there, in my humble opinion. The flos' tward the end were having a problem wtih leaking oil into the tub and getting all over your clothes, that is going to leave a mark! I understand that it was quite common. I had some friends of mine that it happened to, they were none to happy about it, esp after the second service call for the same issue.

I heard about the oil leakage problem also - several times. At the time I was well aware of some of issues that were seemingly created when Whirlpool made some changes to the belt drive machine a few years earlier that were resulting in costly repairs or scrappings. I figured at the time that the old FF design could simply not be made cheaply enough and that lower quality seals, etc. were allowing the oil leak.

I think cost of manufacture was the main reason that both the GE FF and the WP belt drive went out of production.
