Last Phase of Freezer Denial

When it comes to using a crow bar everyday to open the freezer door I'd say that is the last speck of possible repair denial, wouldn't you??

Well after digging around with my head

in the Freezer box all afternoon. I discovered that the evaporator drain tube is clogged with Ice Mold! So it is backing up during defrost and freezing down along the rails that let the drawer slid out.
Thats why I need a crow bar to get the darn thing open.

The tube is now filled with bleach and soaking overnight. We'll see!

I just can't believe I let this go so long! Actually its amazing to restore an appliance like this one made in 1978 and then to have it in use for many years only to have to go back into it to keep it running. How many cycles of repair and restore can there be on an appliance?

Wasn't there a field repair kit for this problem? My Sub-Z from 87 had this same problem - every now and then I'd have to roto-rooter out the drain tube and it would be OK for a while. I never liked that drain system but I loved the refrigerator.

Well it appears to have worked! It was ice mold which i suspected. But I noticed spores all in the condenser unit so I think the source was there so the whole unit was sprayed with bleach as well as the drain tube.

We'll know in 6 months.
