Last Whirlpool washers with transmissions?

I just bought a house and am looking for a washer with a transmission and agitator. Now that the Speed Queens with transmissions are no longer made I am trying to find a washer I can source locally with a transmission. I found this website and was hoping some of you could help me. Here are my questions

- Do anyone know what the last years whirlpool made washer with transmissions & agitators? What are the model numbers?
- Did Whirlpool ever made a washer with a transmission and stainless tub?
- Is there any easy way to tell the capacity from the model number or is there a database of what model numbers have what capacity?

when Whirlpool first took over Maytag.....those machines were available with a stainless tub....colors available were a dark speckle or bright white...but I think it was limited to the Maytag only versions...

any 27 inch cabinet would all be the same size tub, largest available.....24 inch cabinet would have smaller capacity.....

there are too many model numbers to list....but they would all be direct drive units...

this guy seems to offer a lot of Direct drive units......preference goes to one with the speed control knob....most all models with a timer and 4 knobs are speed control units....

any unit with lights under the timer ARE NOT direct drive transmission units.....

Thanks for all the great info! I will look for old Maytags with SS drums and transmissions. As I just started coming up to speed, there is a overwhelming amount of models to try and find the gems in the bunch with the largest capacity and best features.

I want something that cleans like the old transmission units. I just realized Maytag still makes a unit with transmission the MVWP575GW which looks based off their commercial coil operated line. Does this clean like the early 2000's whirlpool / Maytag transmission units? Thoughts?

I am confused by the direct drive term used to describe the old units, don't the new units without transmissions directly drive the tub with the motor so in a sense are more of a direct drive?

Direct Drive refers to the motor, which connects directly to the pump on the front side, and the rear connects via a coupler, directly to the transmission....no belts

the other direct drive your thinking is a computer controlled direct drive...also known as a VMU = Vertical Modular Unit....

the MVMP575GW is a belt drive, the motors constant reversing creates agitation, the so-called transmission is a set of orbital gears that cause the tub to rotate opposite of the agitators movements...

although it does seem like a decent machine for modern technology

The "old" direct drive system had no belts, thus, the transmission was driven directly.

Todays machines are classified as direct drive for the same reason (if no belts are used).

Old machines had the typical transmission.
The agitation motion was created via the transmission.
Reversing the motor determined wheather spinning or agitating was going on.

Today, there are still direct drive and belt drive machines.

Both are VMW style washers. VMW means Vertical Modular Washer. Modular here means that a lot of components are shared.

Both Direct Drive (DD) and belt drive (BD) still use a kind of transmission, though it is way simpler.
This "transmission" is used to lock the basket and wash plate&#92agitator together as needed and as torque conversion.

The main difference is that the DD motors are far more flexibel. A DD motor has a wider range of rpm and torque capabilities, can activley slow down the tub and even gives feedback about the load to the control system during agitation.

The belt drive washers are somewhat less sophisticated, with less agitation flexibility and a little less variety in cycle design.

Speed queen option

There's one more option not many people know about. Speed queen still makes their LWN series commercial washers, with a transmission, no lid lock, etc. You can buy them through commercial retailers for about the price of an 8 series 2017 machine. This should still be in production for the rest of 2018. I've got an LWNE22 speed queen, which is essentially an 8 series model without the load size selector. It's The only PROPER
option for a new washer nowadays. You can buy it through some speed queen retailers, if they're willing to custom order it. I'd go for the lwne52, though, because it has a load size option...

Thanks for the update on the Speed Queen 2018 commercial models. The LWNE52 appears to be a overseas model with 220V 50Hz power requirement.

So the LWN432SP115TW01 and LWNE22SP115TW01 have a transmission. They do not have water level select so I wonder how they compare to the lower cost new Matag in terms of washing performance. Does the Speed Queen only fill half or full tub it is it true auto sensing?

The Direct Drive Whirlpool built machines used a transmission which means the drive motor turns in one direction while agitating and the transmission changes the direction of the agitator, the new Whirlpool washers such as the VMW, or the new heavy duty Maytag commercial domestic washer have a gear case, the gear case, unlike a transmission does not change the direction of the agitator, the new washers today have a reversing motor which constantly changes direction to make the agitator go back and forth. Most newer washers today have a quick reversing motor which agitates the clothes unlike the quick smooth wash action of a transmission.
