Hey Guys,
I was thinking about laundrymats, one in particular that I would
like to share with you. When I was young, Moses was a teenager
and dirt was new, I was transfered on my first real job to
Columbia, Missouri....home of University of Missouri...and managed my first movie theatre. I rented an apartment, so all
laundry had to be taken out. There were a few choices with
laundrymats to choose from and I wanted to sample all that I could. On my quest to find the perfect 'mat', there was not one
area of town that I left uncharted. Even found one old 'mat' with slant front Westys, and lots of Frigidaires, just about
the only machines I didn't find were Philcos. Even found one
with all European front loaders. Anyway, all the laundrymats
were fairly typical, even the ones that were run down with a
beat up old soda machine. Then one day something new came into
town.....DUDS-N-SUDS. OH, it was perfect, it was my laundrymat.
DUDS-N-SUDS featured a concession snack bar with nachos, finger
foods, soft and hard beverges...I think beer only, all served
on a bar with upright stools. You could do your lanundry and
eat lunch too. Hamburgers too. The food was really good for
what they offered and reasonably priced, all served by a hand-
some friendly attendant. And the machines were all new Maytags
of course. No gas dryers. And clean, the whole place was
spotless. Perfect.
I mention DUDS-N-SUDS cause I've never run across on down here
in this area in Texas. I've wondered if it was only a northern
thing, regional. Or maybe because it was a college town. It
truly was just about the perfect laundrymat to hang out, make
friends, and even get your laundry done too. Didn't miss owning
a washer and dryer.
Anybody else???

I Can't recall exactly the

But I remember in the very late eighties or early 90's a few
of the same sort of places opened in San Francisco. The one I
remember first was in the 7 or 800 block of Folsom St., south
of Market. I may have stuck my face in once, just to check it out, but since I always had my own machines at home I was
not a laundrymat user. Apparently for a time it was quite the rage.
