LDA 9800 restoration

I've been restoring an LDA9800 pair from Kevin, I've just finished with the baseplate, A new center post was installed by a machine shop here along with new bearings, seals, spin tube, agitator shaft, rebuilt the tranny, new water pump, filter, new wig-wag. After getting the cabinet up stairs in the laundry room, will drop the baseplate in and install the tub and the rest of the parts.
I hung the baseplate from the ceiling in the basement and used a creeper to install everything on the underside. With 8 steps up to the laundry room I figured this would be much easier than getting it up, with everything back in it.
These Machines were and are in great shape, much of what I did, did not need to be done but, down the line if anything goes wrong I will know what has been replaced. And from taking it all apart will know how to remove and install, any parts if needed.

you are doing an AMAZING restoration job on that washer. those baseplate & parts look brand new!!!

New Centerpost?

Please detail what you went through to replace the centerpost! That seems to be the weak link on these machines and I'd love to know what it takes to replace it.

Centerpost

Dave I am not sure exactly how/what he did to install it, I do know that the new one is thicker, he had to mill some of the inside to the bearing size, the outside is the same as the original. I had to order a 10ft piece of stainless, he could not get a shorter size. I figured I could use the rest if I ever needed to replace another one, which if I can find a decent baseplate I am going to do that. When I get the chance I will stop there and ask him how he installed it. I will say it's in there tight though, this guy does an awsume job on anything he does !!!! The place is just a small metal fabrication shop, but they do alot of work, mainly due their quality of work.... Jim

Rebuilt Baseplate For A BD WP Washer

Looks Great Jim, The centerposts in WP built BD washers were just pressed into the heavy stamped steel baseplates, so Jim's metal guy pressed out the rusted CP and pressed in a new heavier SS centerpost, this should last forever.

On older WPs the centerpost was welded into the baseplate, but at some point in the later 60s they just started to press them in place which certainly makes them easier to replace. If I were going to replace this part I would tack weld it just to be sure, but I am sure it will work fine.

We are all looking forward to seeing the finished machines, you will easily have the best condition pair of a 70s WP Mark-12 set.

Thanks John and hippiedoll for the great comments.... I had done a lot of research on centerpost replacement which I found had never been done. I spoke with John and Gordon asking for advice, which they gave me... based on that and what little I could find.... I was a bit hesitant but had it done, and it seems to have turned out great !!!! as John stated, having torn it all apart I should have requested some welding but it slipped my mind when I took it in so it was not done...I'm anxious to get it all back together and see how it goes, when I installed the transmission, all the mounting bolts lined up and there was no binding so I take that as a good sign.... I will post more when it's all back together and running........ again thanks to everyone for the great comments and help..... Jim

Sure Kevin I'll do that, and yes I have already gone through the dryer, new blower seals, drum seals, drum rollers, belt, belt roller, changed the burner over to L.P. I thought of you as I was taking the blower apart, I found 2 dimes and some type of key in the blower housing.. I kept all three things, Oh I also ordered and replaced the light bulbs and starters for both the washer and dryer, on one of them it took a while for the light to come on, so before they were not avaliable any longer I ordered several, of each. I will send more pics as I take them
On the washer 3 of the suspension balls were pretty dry rotted I managed to find 7 of them, I think I got all that were left out there, I'm going to install new suspension balls as well... I sanded down the little surface rust that the washer had, primed it and was able to find bottles of touch up paint... Jim
