Leaking Maytag LAT9406

Technically I suppose this thread belongs in Deluxe but it's the classic 2-belt Maytag, so ...

Friend brought his machine for attention. He changed the belts a few days ago, now it's suddenly leaking, badly.

I happen to have both the 22204012 stem seal kit and 204013 spin bearing kit on hand.

Which is indicated for a leak per these pics? Can I get by without pulling the tub? Or should both be done?

Serial number indicates Sept 1998.

As for as I know there is no way to repair this without pulling the tub. And, if you're going to change one, you might as well change both because there has most likely been water in the spin bearing. I did one of these on a 1995 machine last fall. Really only took a couple of hours start to finish. Not a leak, peep or squeak since then!

Leaking MT LAT Washer

It has been leaking a little longer than a few weeks, LOL, Yes I agree with Mark change to tub bearing and the complete seal assembly. MT really cheapened the tub bearing material in the mid 1990s and a leaking seal usually ruins the bearing, and when one has been leaking a while like this one you may also have to cut and break the tub bearing insert off the top of the transmission as they become impossible to remove because of corrosion. Also pay special attention to the condition of the agitator shaft where it contacts the agitator shaft seal, if the shaft is not in perfect condition the repair may not last very long as lip type seals are not very durable if there are any surface imperfections on the agitator shaft.

Yeah, replacement of both parts is already in progress.  The sleeve did have to be cut off.  Thanks for the tip on the agitator shaft condition, will have a look-see at it for sure.

If you can, add the old style agitator shaft seal in addition to the new lip sealed seal. The only 'if' is IF your transmission has the little plastic white keeper on the upper shaft. If it does, I don't think the extra seal trick will work... If this helps, here's a link to the how to I did with Dan on the subject with seal part numbers, etc...

I've seen them looking uglier than that. How about when the whole bearing and seal assy freezes on to the trans shaft and spins in the hole in the tub and grinds the lip off? New outer tub time!

It does have the nylon piece on the tranny shaft.  The shaft is OK by my estimation.  All done, leak-tested, and loaded on the truck.  Not a bad job, and this is the first I've done.  Now I'm more confident to tackle my 906 ... although I expect it'll be much more ornery.

Sorry for the delay.  Been occupied with this and that ... mostly that, LOL.

Not ready to get rid of the pair but you get first choice if that happens.

Or maybe you'd like a MAV208DAWW instead??   :-D
