I Am Overwhelmed:

A section on GLBT rights and issues on www.whitehouse.gov - and under the "Civil Rights" heading, where it belongs!

This is a new day. I imagine President Obama is going to hit some roadblocks accomplishing the agenda he has set forth here - and there will be those who feel the agenda has its flaws - but he has actually set one forth.

Let's be supportive of this man, and patient with him. There is a lot to do.

Nice to see that, but . . .

let's not forget that the day before the last election many households here in California were phoned and on the other end of the line was a recording by Obama himself saying that in his belief marriage was only between a man and a woman. He also said he was against Proposition 8, so how can we figure out what he really believes with regard to LGBT rights? What is clear now is that Obama's ugly little quote was a big reason many people voted for him and then voted against full civil rights for gay people. He then selected Rick Warren to give the invocation at yesterday's inauguration - this is the same minister who spent significant amounts of time and money in the Proposition 8 fight comparing gay sex to bestiality, incest, and polygamy. I can understand Obama choosing a conservative minister, but there are thousands in the nation so why choose one who has publically been so very nasty in his objection to our very existance?

In spite of all the above I'd vote for Obama again, as he and Biden were IMO the better choice for many reasons beyond just LGBT considerations. Being Democrats, they're much less likely to work against us than McCain and Palin, and maybe they'll start showing some consistent support in the future - only time will tell. Until then it appears that we have a president who believes passionately in full racial equality but not in civil rights for all Americans; it's a strage distinction.

Glass half full...

Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples: President Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples. Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights.

" legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples."

With that in our court its only one step away from complete marriage rights, everything but the name. I think its a great start and a huge improvement from the previous administration. Granted we wont stop fighting until we are 100% there, but its damn close from day 1.

Yay for glass half full!

Thanks for posting this Robert. I for one am very happy to see such pharses and statements even being published on a website dedicated to the White House. While I don't anticipate any of those things to come easy or to full fruition, I am glad that it has been reconized and a starting point for equal rights for people.

semantics - again?

You can call it a sealing, union, marriage, whatever. Without the legal "civil" component in the ceremony, the government will not recognize it. If a civil union between a same-sex couple has the full effect and same legal rights as a opposite-sex couple, then it is the same thing. You can have wedding, marriage, sealing, non-breeding binding, whatever you like on the invitation but the legality of it is the same. Isn't that what we're really after? Who gives a crap what the religious whackos think? Civil rights should and hopefully will include all citizens.

A caller on gay sattelite radio suggested a federal mandate forcing all states to rename marriage as "Domestic Partnerships" and that they must include same-gender couples.

In this way only religious cermonies would be called "Marriges". By default then, all "Marriages" also have and be a state-recognized "Domestic Partnership", automatically, when the paperwork is filled-out.

We solved the religious

problem in Europe a long time ago.
Your civil marriage is the one recognized by the State.

Your religious ceremony is the 'marriage' which your religion requires.

Works just fine. Everybody gets to keep believing their version of God is the one and only, nobody is discriminated against by the State.

Actually, I do believe the US is the only modern country left in Western Civilization to do it differently.

Not a problem, Obama just needs to keep his promises.

I would like to go on record as saying that I'm happy, very happy, to see the President's commitments posted in writing (as such) less than 24 hours after the cowboy left DC. I hope he's able to accomplish many, if not all, the things he's outlined.
