Some crazy appliance guy in Orlando working for Appliance Direct made this commercial pitting four dishwashers against each other in a "Cake Test". (Link below)

He places a Red Velvet cake in each dishwasher and then runs a cycle. Only one dishwasher came out clean, the other three were uhm.. "caked up".

It appears that the dishwasher which passed the test was a Whirlpool with a garberator in it. The rest appear to be using a filter system.

So, is this really a fair test to determine the effectiveness of a dishwasher? Or is this just really a sales gimmick to sell dishwashers with built in garberators?

It's true but biased!
The cake was placed in the dead zone, did you noticed?
Directly in the center of the lower rack where cleaning is the least effective and the lady did not open the third dishwasher door for all to view even if the interior was all wet!
As you know, all dishwasher will dry a load pretty well if flashing was done at the end of the cycle.
So this show and tell was half true!
Kenmore done this years ago and the cake was placed on the top rack if I remembered......

Miele had a similar ad in 1967 with a filter system dishwasher.
Could be just a sales gimmick to sell an obsolete technology. I doubt that the three filter dischwashers were run with hot enough water in this test.

If the rest of the cake is still in the middle, there is no reason for the conclusion that the filter is the reason for it.

And after 57 minutes? Most new dishwasher take way longer than that, we have been discussin that before. After 57 minutes the main wash hasn't finished yet.

IMHO this is just a sales gimmick. If they would do an honest comparison they would let the machines finish their cycles.

Now you`ve got me curious, never heard of a Phonebook in a washer.

What is is supposed to prove ?

The phone book test was for testing the washers suspension system-the off balance spin.

When I went to go buy my GE top loader back in 2004, that was exactly what the salesguy did. He said, "This isn't your father's GE.. Look..."

He threw the phonebook in and then put it on a regular spin cycle. The washer made a racket but didn't go crazy or walk around.

We've had numerous occasions where our washer sounded like it was going to reach out and kill someone because it was really out of balance, but it never walked across the floor or tipped over.

Too bad I couldn't have used the "Cake" trick at the appliance store.. I wouldn't mind destroying a $8 cake to prove that a $1200 dishwasher can do its job.

I remember Kenmore commercial with the cake, but if my memory serves me, I think a few years ago Cascade Complete had a commercial with a cake to show how it disolves food particles. 

 

I was just thinking to myself.  I wonder what the drain hose looks like when all that stuff hits the pump?

In the late 70s early 80s, David Horowitz had a show called, Fight Back. A woman sent in a letter after seeing Sears put a cake in the dishwasher. They brought in a Kenmore and let it eat it on the show. The dishwasher ate it.

Phonebook in washer: Coronado (I think) used to run print ads that said their machine would spin with nothing but a bowling ball in the tub. They specified the weight of the bowling ball, but I don't recall what it was.

Holy carp! A bowling ball?!?!?! You'd think that would damage the agitator!

Man, I think the true test of the durability of any washer, top loading or front loading, would to have it wash a bowling ball!

I personally would love to see a professionally made commercial doing that.

Well,

When you think of Cake it's structure is nothing.
It for the most part Melts in your Mouth So when Hot water and detergent hits it for 1.5 hours with multiple drains, Of course it's gone.
