So I found an old Laundromat with the original sign by accident a few months back in Livermore, CA. The sign read "Wash N Dry" and underneath it read "Philco Bendix." I nearly crashed my car in the intersection.
I had a deep gut feeling that I should contact the owner and let them know that I was interested in the sign if there ever was a replacement in the near future, but I kept putting it off. Well, today I drove by and the sign was replaced!! I immediately called the office and explained my interest in old signs, especially Laundromat ones. The lady said they cut up the sign in pieces to dispose of it. She said she would have LOVED to have given me the sign for FREE.
Let this be a lesson! If you come a across an old sign, immediately let the owner know of your interest. This beautiful piece of history is gone forever.......and could have been saved if it weren't for my lazy ass!!
