Sweet Car! During my brief sales period, i saw a couple of these come in on trade from elderly people for newer caddies..One we had still had the 4-6-8 working, it had a switch as well, so when she drove on the interstate she could flip it back to all 8.. That thing only had 32K... She traded it in for a 2002 Deville or Seville.....Your right is was very jerky and awful.. Though we did sell the darn thing for $7,500... The other one was blue and belonged to an old man who had it fixed on all 8 cylinders.. He'd had it scince almost new.. It had like 200+ thousand miles on it and was bad off.. It stunk soooo bad.... Ewww.... He bought a Chevy Subdivison (thats the best name for it) and loved it..

Any who.. Nice car

PS: I take it your parents give you nice gifts? Like mine...

Love the modified Caddy Ben. When they start looking like that, I want to see them able to hop. I just love the way the big old boats look with the hydraulics when they bounce! Wish I had done that to my 61 Oldsmobile. That car would be sick as a low rider!

I was always intrigued with the 8-6-4 concept when I was a kid. Seemed like a great way to have power when you needed it but also have fuel economy - all in the same car! Too bad the technology just wasn't quite perfected. Has anyone noticed: this technology is back on some of the new cars, and apparently the bugs are worked out (at least I'm not hearing any complaints like I did back in 1981).

Very nice Nate!

My dad had an '83 Coupe DeVille with the HT4100 engine. He LOVED that car like no other.
My mom could not stand it! She got "dinged" by a shopping cart once at the grocery store with the Caddy, and by the way dad acted you'd have thought a freight train had run into the side!
Mom b**ched every time she had to drive the Cadillac after that, until finally dad could take it no longer. He traded in his car(1980 Buick Regal) and bought mom a beautiful 1985 Buick LeSabre Limited Collectors Edition 2-door, in black with red pinstripes. Mom loved that car so much she kept it 20 years! Dad drove the Cadillac everyday to work and back. The Caddy stayed around until 1990, when it was traded in for a new Lincoln Towne Car.

Thanks!

Hi guys, sorry for the tardy replies; I was out of town over the weekend :-|

Ben -- WOW, I love that performance Caddy! Eight liters?? Good grief!! I want that steering wheel, though. The leather on mine looks like a bad banana peel. :-)

Rick -- LOL, it took me a while until I realized that 8-6-4 was the correct order, not 4-6-8. But it makes sense; you're not driving a four-cylinder all the time :-) I will look for that switch and see what I can find--it'd be great if they did it that way, and didn't do something silly like cutting wires. Thanks also for the info that the modulated displacement is safe for the engine--I will feel better, and Will probably will as well :-)

Yes, I read about those HT4100 engines, and all the horror stories. I especially liked the way they could round-off the cam lobes and still sit there and idle happily at 400 RPM. Thankfully, most stories about the 368s have been pretty tame--nothing particularly out of the ordinary.

Greg -- Thanks! Yes, that's a Regal next door. It's been low-rider'ed, and smells like a coal furnace when it starts up in the morning. It also leaks more oil than the Valdez. It belongs to the downstairs neighbor. It has the 5.0 Litre engine, but would appear to have no piston rings left. Nevertheless, it has megasound and a DVD entertainment system. Go figure.

Though most of the automakers have revived Displacement-on-Demand, my friend here at work who has a 2006 Dakota says it still has noticeable lag and jerks when cylinders are activated or deactivated.

I don't think that the technology has changed much; it's just that, like Rick said, it really pissed people off to have something that was jerky and intrusive on a car that was supposed to be the essence of smoothness. Had they done it on a Chevy, no one probably would have cared :-)

Cadillac to Buick conversion

Jeff -- Ooh, those were nice Buicks--I see them running around rarely here, and they still look good today. I can understand why your mom liked that one--I loved my grandparents' plain-ol' 1987 LeSabre Limited. I remember, with the ultrasoft suspension, how you could punch the gas on the 3.8 V6 and almost see sky for a couple of seconds until the car settled down.

The Caddy holds its own in acceleration, but isn't a Lamborghini by a longshot; however, I like the relaxing experience of driving it, and I love a huge car. And since she has 128K on her, we do not tromp the gas. :-)

Man, now that is a gift to end all gifts. ENJOY IT!

Sure beats the 2 for $10 polyester ties I used to get as a gift from the street outside of Macy's on 34th Street. LOL

And how suave does Mr. Rick look pushing product? !!!!
"You needs this Cadu, baby!"
