Has anyone recently purchased family room furniture in the last year?  My partner is a tad "portly".  I have back issues. What brands of upholstered furniture do you like.  We live in our family room, eat down here sometimes off the coffeetable and have pets. I have had good service from Lazy Boy brand chairs.  The current project will be 2 new sofas.  My dad always swore by get a hide a bed, as it has more steel and spring support.  I would appreciate your opinions. Why does Lazy boy not sell on line? That seems like poor business in 2014.  Thanks alr

My furniture ...

... is Stickley, which may be out of most people's price range.

I'm neither portly nor have back problems (fortunately), but I think we do have the same sofa "requirements"; I hate sofas in which one sinks down to the point where the hips are below the knees, and there's so little back support that your entire body is crunched into a "C" position.

Unfortunately, that seems to be MOST sofas these days.

One of the general designs that always works for me is a solid frame sofa with loose cushions, supported by tight straps or even an extra panel of wood beneath. The advantage to this design is that it's cost-effective and simple to replace the cushions (or even just the "stuffing") as it breaks down, rather than having to replace the entire sofa. At the very least, I require a sofa with loose seat cushions that can be replaced or restuffed; otherwise, the entire sofa will need to be either replaced inside of ten years, or overhauled (which these days costs just as much as replacing).

Or, if you're into the more modern look, there are a couple very good knockoff verions of the "Womb" sofa.

Here's a photo of what I'm talking about, in terms of the "frame" sofa:[this post was last edited: 3/1/2014-07:25]

Flex-Steel Furniture

Look for this brand, as it has metal bands that support you, and unlike conventional upholstering, holds larger framed people, and supports much better. They are also much less prone, to collapsing, or sagging, and come in a multitude of styles and colors. Our friends, one being large, bought a leather set, and it is comfortable, and beautiful.

Thank You both for your responses.  I want to buy the right thing and be done at this address.  No one can foresee everything in the future.  I do want to pony up on the sturdiness springs/foam and fabric.  I have a Lane Sofa in the real living room I like the support and the firmer feel.  It is just hard to know how well it would hold up in our family room as we seldom use the living room.  Thanks again guys.  I don't want to over invest but I like to be comfortable and easy maintenance (vacuum it and spot clean).  If we continue to live here and nothing happens it will probably be my last sofa purchase.   Flex-steel may be more in line with our needs.

Things to consider ...

The Womb chair has no springs or support to wear out (and yet, being a single piece of fiberglass, it's unbelievably supportive and comfortable). You can go as down market or high end as you want with the upholstery, including pure wool and leather. If you have pets (especially cats), I've found that high-quality leather is really the only way to go. It's a hell of a lot easier when you come home from work to clean up a surprise that the cat yakked up 6 hours ago from a leather surface, rather than fabric, which has had time to absorb and "set" every last drop of the nastiness.
