Our 4 year old Kenwhirl dishwasher is really acting up... already had a service guy come out and give us some service codes to reset it, but it can't really comeplete a cycle... Argh! So frusturating, I just want my mom to have a reliable appliance... she thinks this dw and her frigemore FL that bit the dust were both made by sears... I tried to explain, I really did, but it wasn't going to happen. So I was thinking maybe get something vintage, and Robert's thread made me think of a Kitchen-Aid... When did they stop being made by Hobart? ARE THEY RELIABLE??????????????????? What would be the biggest capacity, TOL, no BS, model made by them?? Would they make a good daily driver? How hard are they to find in good shape?

They are highly reliable machines, durable, built like tanks. The Hobart made machines differ from the Hobart designed machines in that the Hobart designed machines were made after Whirlpool took over KitchenAid. But the model 21 is probably one of the best KitchenAids around. I have a model KUDS22 that is about 20 years old now, and still looks new. The 23 series is a Hobart design with the Whirlpool power module pump - also a good machine. They do not have the convenience that a tall tub offers, but they use more than sufficient water, wash well, and rarely, if ever, break down. They do wear out, but they are easy to fix. Parts are available to a good degree, especially on this site!!

NOT A CRUDDY TALL TUB!!!
This is not your run of the mill Kitchen aid, Guys!! This is a rarely seen Kitchen Aid International Series machine that was brought over from Europe to the US market. It obviously didnt make too much of an impression.
I cant tell you who built it or if it was a rebadged machine but it reminded me of the Gaggenau or asko type machines. I have a service information book on it which covers some of the basic features but have never seen one in my life. But I would love to have one. It even came with the Stainless steel tank. It is a great find for any of us who have a passion for machines of this type.

Steve - I think those were Asko built machines, if I remember correctly. They were only out for a year, weren't they? As I remember, they were pretty freakin expensive, but held a shitload of dishes compared to the traditional KitchenAid of the time. Have no idea how they performed. Do they have a vertical or horizontal mounted motor???

Jed - If you want to find yourself a KitchenAid, start cruising behind appliance stores like Lowes, HD, and your other local establishments who pickup/deliver. You're bound to find one sooner or later. They were certainly very popular machines in their time. You will no doubt find one or more that are in perfect working condition.
The Filter and Racking
Look at bit like a Euro Whirlpool/Philips of the era.

I discovered the owners manual for this onine while looking at the KA site. It looks like Asko or could even be Baukernacht (sp). You can adjust the instensity of the top rack spray. And Andrew is right, the bottom holds a boat load of dishes. The top rack has one of those funnel things in the middle of it like a Frigidaire Precision Wash dishwasher (for the 3rd level spary). A definite rare, cool dishwasher and someone needs to save it. Rapid advance mechanical timer.

hey jet welcome to the world of suckpool i mean whirpool. my dishwasher wasnt even 3 years old and it went to the crusher (would of cost $175 to repair). i replaced with my asko (cost me $0 dad got off a job). works great.
Our KA 22 has been trouble-free for 18 years of regular use. We are leaving it behind when we move and I will be on the lookout for a similar model KA machine to replace the early 90's Maytag that's installed at the new place. I just can't hang with the inefficient rack design and inferior performance of the Maytag. I've been spoiled by a solid and reliable, tried and true Hobart-designed KA.
Cruise your local Craig's List for one of these machines, even in the "free" section. That's what I'm doing but will add HD to the list of hunting grounds. Plus, a KA of that era is easy to operate.

We had a 93 Maytag near TOL DW. It was probably the best DW we ever had. It's stil going strong to this day! It was super quiet and it would clean ANYTHING, including baked on foods.

One could say that. I recently fixed one, and it's sort of depressing to see how far the once mighty have fallen. This specimen was only about five years old. Its door latch had broken--despite the fact that the door was only latched when washing dishes, which happened about once a week.
Back to the original question...I have not had experience with KitchenAid dishwashers. But I can say their mixers were really well made. And I have NEVER heard a single negative comment about the "real" KitchenAid dishwashers. They always had the same reputation for quality and reliability that Maytag had.

I've found about five Hobart made KA dishwashers on the local Craig's List. Some were free, some I paid a nominal sum for. One is in service (a 1958 top loading portable), the others are "waiting their turns", lol.

I wound up tossing a model 21KDS because it has been so abused - door was sprung, filter mesh gone, racks a wreck, etc. I did save the heater thermostat, though. It's now keeping the plates warm in my KD-2P.
